Discussion about
I know what a concierge will do for you in a hotel, tickets, reservations, special arrangements, but what does a concierge do in a co-op/condo in Manhattan?

When I lived at the Rivergate they had a concierge. They held the dry cleaning for me and packages that were delivered. They were good because I remembered I needed a cleaning person for my apt.and they had a list.

A true concierge in Manhattan does the same stuff as a concierge in hotels -- get your reservations, etc. The higher-end condos have professional concierge companies which book reservations months in advance, and then offer them to the residents on the day off.
That's the high-end concierge, though. Now a days, every building with a doorman calls it a "doorman/concierge". Unless your guy is connected with one of the professional concierge companies, then he doesn't offer anything over what a regular doorman could do.

When the husbands are off at work, do the concierges f%*k the lonely housewives? Now that is service.

Then what does the doorman do? Is he mostly there for holding the door & hailing a cab & helping with your bundles as you come in OR is his function more one of security? In addition to f%*king the lonely housewives, of course. Mmm mmm, those girls are gettin' it comin' & goin' !

I live in a high end building, and we have doormen, hallmen, a concierge, porters, a handyman, security, engineering, and a super. They each handle their specific role and at the end of the year your tipping pool is very high. A doorman will handle all of these roles if they have time. But when I get home, it is like a hotel; Doorman help me out of my cab with my bags. He hands off to hallman which will take me upstairs. Concierge can help with the traditional requests, but they announce guests, offer wake up call services, can help with reservations, someone you can call and talk to 24/7 if traveling. We also have a package room with attendent. I would say everyone offers value, but it can get expensive at Christmas time.

#9 apparently lives in one of the premier buildings so it must be a multi-million dollar apartment with thousands of dollars in monthlies & you only live in a place like that if you're loaded. End of story. (No judgement implied; good for her!)

Wake-up calls?? I understand if you're away from home, don't have an alarm clock but for gosh sake, do people actually have the doorman/concierge call them every morning at home??

I used www.nycmove.com for helping us find the right area for us and they were great for so many things, they even found me a dentist that I now love...

I heard that one of the professional concierge services actually calls up all the hot restaurants periodically to make reservations 2 months in advance. Then the week of the reservation, they email their clients saying "hey, we've got reservations to XYZ for this friday, do any of you want them?" And of course their clients say "yes, please!" But the irony is that if the concierge services didn't do that; then it wouldn't be nearly as hard for people to get reservations in the first place...
