If you had to reverse commute, where would you live?

Discussion about
My brother is about to buy a place on Prince St. Only issue is his business is in bergen county. The other day we disagreed about whether he should be looking in soho or uws/ues for ease of commute. He's 31 and single but I still think he'll find himself angry for not buying uptown. Any thoughts?

Prince Street is closer to the Holland Tunnel, which is the best way out of the city in a reverse commute situation. Lincoln & GWB are the worst at night to get back to Manhattan, Holland is best by far.
I reverse commuted for a few years - to both North & South Jersey - and I live in Chelsea. Would never have survived it living uptown.

my husband has to commute to Ridgewood NJ and we have a weekend home in Ct. We thought only the UWS. Do you think that Holland Tunnel is even better than GWB?

reallystate, I know the Cross-Bronx can back up the eastbound GWB in the evening, but I would think the lane reversals on the Holland would be even worse. No?

On another note, someone I know who used to reverse commute to Northern New Jersey said that the old, tight interchanges in that area, unable to handle local traffic, were the worst part of the commute -- not the Hudson crossings.

e76, where does your bro live now, and is he already doing the reverse commute? Maybe the real problem, for him in particular, is that he's planning on buying rather than renting until he sees what works ... and whether he's married to the job in NJ, for that matter. Assuming "his business" actually means he's an employee.

I reverse commute to Westchester (no Hudson river crossing), and my husband reverse commutes to Bergen county, NJ. We live in Hudson Heights which is great for those commutes considering the proximity to the GWB and Henry Hudson Bridge. We have grown a bit tired of being so far uptown and now plan on moving to the UWS. Don't let people's warnings of the inbound GWB on a typical evening put you off to that commute. My husband never found the evening traffic to be bad (save the occasional accident on the span etc.) Also, there are many ways onto the inbound GWB other than the typical 95/80 entrance. There are more local routes that are amazing. If we hear on 1010 wins that there is a 1-2 hour delay (a Sun. evening nightmare) on the GWB, we use the local roads and can usually be in the Heights in about 20 min!

I have done the reverse commute for 10 years from Manhattan into Northern NJ. I have taken all 3 bridge/tunnels since I've lived uptown and downtown. Holland tunnell, Lincoln and GWB are fine in the morning to NJ. Depending on how early you leave in the morning it would usually come to a 45 minute door to door commute.

For the evening commute back the Holland tunnel and GWB were probably equal in commute time. Although the GWB occasionally (once a month) had 1 hr to 1.5 hour backlogs that would only be 40 minutes via the Holland tunnel. My conclusion is either is fine, so your brother should not avoid downtown for the reverse commute reason.

The evening lincoln tunnel commute into the city is to be avoided at all times. Those who live in midtown area are better off taking the GWB into NY in the evening

ynotie29 is 100% right about turning 1 - 1.5 hour delay on the GWB into a 20 minute one by taking a local route to the bridge . I know of several routes

If your brother insists on living downtown, then his best bet for the commute home is to take the GWB and driving down the West Side Highway. The south bound West Side Highway is usually not too bad in the evening. Getting from Bergen County to the Holland Tunnel can be a very, very difficult commute in the evening rush hour. I wouldn't do it. Friday is the worst day for evening rush hour, especially during the holiday season and often in the summer. If he can flex his hours to leave by 3 P.M. on Friday, it will make a difference.

midtown west side is another good option-not to mention a great place to live. then you have the option of using GWB, midtown tunnel, or Holland tunnel, depending on traffic reports. I, too, commuted regularly to Bergen for many years and found that the GWB was almost always the most efficient path to & fro

I reverse commute to Morris County....about 50 miles or so....UWS has been a great spot to do that from as you really have your choice on the way back in (which is, agreed, always the challenge). As I have a very flexible schedule, I usually come back in the Lincoln tunnel but I always try and be in before the lane changing that happens somewhere between 3:30pm and 4:00pm
