Discussion about
We are looking to move from Manhattan to Brooklyn by renting a uHaul, Ryder, etc. truck and pack and move everything ourselves. Any insight on: 1) How do we park in front of our building on the east side in the 60's? - there's a "truck loading zone" across the street, but right out in front is a no stopping zone from 8 am to 7 pm. We need to move on a Friday or Saturday (so can't take advantage of Sunday parking rules). Are we guaranteed a ticket and how much will this be? 2) Any recommendations on trucks (size, costs)? We're looking at getting a 17, or 24 foot uHaul. The building we're moving into is a condo building and they have not said anything about needing to use a professional moving company. Anything else we need to consider? Thanks in advance.
How many rooms are you packing?
How many people are helping you move?
If you're moving into a standard-sized one-bedroom apartment, and you have all of the usual grown-up stuff (fully outfitted kitchen, bedroom set, living room, dining furniture, etc.), you'd better plan on having at the very least four people who'll be doing the heavy lifting.
Even with professional movers, my move took all day with four men (and this was a flat fee service).
Hi NYCMatt - we're going from a studio (with a lot of stuff) + a 4 X 6 X 10 storage facility to a 3BR with a 5 X 7 storage facility; we plan on having 4-6 people helping.
Anyone know about how we park outside my building in Manhattan - are there permits for this? Should I just call 311? I did some research and I think I found that NYC does not issue these permits except to moving companies, though not sure.
No permits that I am aware of. We moved in May to a building with a bus stop in front. The moving company was issued a ticket (even though the "bus stop" ran the entire length of our building--probably 100 ft. and the truck was all the way at the back...that is, there was still plenty of room for the bus). I think it was $150 or thereabouts and we paid it, not the moving co (you sign an agreement in advance).
I would look to see what type of parking you usually have across the street on your move out days. My guess is that on Saturday you have less delivery traffic so you may want to focus on moving on Saturday. You could maybe get some orange cones to block out the space early in the morning.
All buildings I have lived in require $2 million of liability insurance for damage -- alll movers have this -- but you may need it to both move out and move in -- this only came up as I moved into higher end places. Just check.
