Greetings, As I am new to SE, I'm not sure if there has been a stock market thread, so here it is. While lurking, I find many many of you seem to have an interest in finance/trading/investing. I also see an incredible amount of "smart" people here, so I hope some of you will chime in. This is not for trading purposes but rather just a thread to keep an eye on the markets. I ran a small hedge fund back in the days and still keep a close eye on the markets. So let your thoughts fly and I hope this will be helpful for some of you. Today's observation so far: Day after the discount rate hike, mkt looks like it wants to get back to unch'd or better. The hike, as I pointed out last night, was already telegraphed by the Fed and the CPI came in rather tame. We have options expiration today so maybe we'll see the typical last hour volitility, but certainly the mkt (so far) looks like it's shrugging off the rate hike pretty well - as somewhat expected. Homebuilders: Most showing small gains or unch'd. Vintage65 PS: This is not neccessarily a daily thread. Main goal is just to stay "up" on important days or major moves. [less]
Who said anything about me being witty or funny? I'm saying this thread is funny. Read S.L.O.W.L.Y..
Again aboutrady for the 1 millionth time. America 1912, no income tax great contry.
and you won't be wearing a helmet? fine. your insurance should have a clause that your health coverage is voided if you don't wear a helmet.
my mother worked on a trauma ward. she saw the vegetables that came in from the motorcycle crashes who hadn't been wearing helmets. she wasn't wise herself, albeit without adequate info when she started smoking, but she made me promise never to get on a motorcycle. i've been a bit of a wild child over the years, but upon occasion I went to the hospital ward where she worked. no thanks.
smithy, fail. the earlier comment that I made and you referred to specifically was regarding your lllllffffmmmmmaaaaaoooo. comment or some such.
read a little faster maybe?
Julia, 1912? and what happened over the next decade or two? sorry, that was just dumb.
Wow, Steve, you really lost your shirt on those shorts (pun intended). I feel for you, even though you were an *ss.
somewherelse - It doesn't matter. He was "...up 300% last year, and up 80% this year on top of that..."
This is silly.
Few can time markets well for the long-run.
AND
Most people brag about their gains, and neglect to mention their losses.

It's all good fellas.
ERICHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
12K Dow
S&P 1300"
Who's laughing now?
Not so crazy now is it?
Dow 450 points away.
S&P 45 points away.
Should see it in the 2nd quarter of 2011.
> Who's laughing now?
Me!
Thanks for noticing!
I told folks to buy stocks, well before you did ericho. And, unlike you, didn't lose is back in RE.
SSOs up 242.89%!
How nice of you to point that out.
Ah, here is a classic...

SSO... double long S&P.
We're talking about buying opportunity of the decade. And, hey, if I'm wrong, it doesn't matter... money won't be worth anything anyway."
Yes, ericho, it's been good... make that GREAT.
I didn't notice until just now, Dow slowly creeping closer to... perhaps 12k this week?
Dow 12k!
Time to sell? I think so.
I'm taking some off the table. 257%, can't be too greedy now.
Congratulations!
Thanks!
I took a some more off the table today too.
I sold about 2/3 of my holdings over the past few days.
I shaved off a little more today.
"You're welcome, SWE - but I bought the shorts on Friday after the market was up 500 points, so it's not quite the spin you give it.
And I'm standing by them!"

OUCH. I feel for you man... actually, who am I kidding... I don't... you were an ass.
so, who wants to make a call from here?
I've been taking profits...
I've also been taking profits. Currently more short than long. Getting killed on the short, but otherwise comfortable. It seems as if it's still totally controlled. Yesterdays end of day ramp even started a bit early. I've been trading for 17 years. This is a very dangerous market for longs and shorts. What to do with all that cash? Buy RE? Maybe time to short the bubble they're building in silver......? not me
Suggestions for mega cash are welcomed. The zero interest rates are killing.
Making a call from here is impossible. anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded. there will be a day, when they can't ramp it anymore. maybe... a black swan that they can't find a positive spin for.....
I bought a little more on the dip... but I've since sold that back and more. I started looking at my total exposure, and with the runup, it had gotten high. Certainly no longer time for the above 100% anymore.
gaongaon, in terms of cash, its tough.... bonds are risky with rates so low. I don't think of this as "investment" more a safety thing, but I've been picking up TIPS, and some short and intermediate bond funds... plus some high grade corporate.
took some more off the table today...
Wow. This is one of the first big dips I didn't buy more in. I thought we might be in the petering-out stage.
But that we've almost cut the loss in half. Man, something is behind this...
Somewhereelse, I think the game is over for now. Say goodnight to the market, IMHO.
Do you mean it's going down or up?
I've been taking profits...
Somewhereelse, so you are selling today, and columbiacounty sold in early March 2009.
Interesting.
DOWN. The market is cooked. Today is May 16. No more BTFD.
