Discussion about
Does anyone live in a non smoking rental building or have owned a building that you took non-smoking? I am interested in how it is enforced with renters - i.e. written into leases, fines, etc. Co-op is much more straightforward but enforcing it with renters seems more difficult.

i had a buyer ask if people were allowed to smoke on their terraces, i said yes. she went off, and i just hung up. if you're that mental, you need to get a house on an acre of land in the boonies.

Being the owner is great because you can do whatever you want. Being a renter is the opposite - you have to roll over and take whatever the owner wants to do.

And I believe going non smoking will add value to the building.

so what you're saying that if you have a friend who's a smoker, you will not let that person smoke on your balcony and make them go downstairs to smoke in front of your building?

what if you get some Cubans? no stoggies for you?

there are many things that can be done to ensure that smells in general do not travel through the building. i would much rather have a smoker then a filth bag or someone with incontinence living around me. those are much worse.

Looked out my window, and a guy was sitting on the ledge of his open window, across the street; smoking a doob. He looked very happy, but it made me nervous. ( He didn't fall.)

ab_ most smokers are filth bags who throw their cigarettes out their windows onto other peoples balconies, on the floors of the common areas etc. Its not the smoke that makes us want to go non smoking - it is the filth that smokers inflict on everyone else in the building

I haven't seen him for a few months. If he still lives there, he must be very happy that Fairway is opening one block away. I expect to see him in the baked-goods aisle. Often.

why does he smoke doob on the ledge I wonder? Can't he just blow the smoke out the window like we all used to do or is his mother that nosy. I have heard that today's "crop" is much more potent but (unless I was an acrobat) I don't think I would want to sit on a building ledge under the influence of even the Mexican crap we used to get a quarter oz for $10.

Don't think someone with the extreme munchies would have the patience for lines at Fairways. That's what convenience stores were built for...aaahh Twinkies.

Oh and I agree with ab_11218. Haven't smoke cigs in 18 years but I don't think what people do in the privacy of their own home should be regulated.

ab_11218 smokers should be allowed to smoke. Do you believe that they should be allowed to throw their used butts on other peoples property? like onto balconies and inside peoples windows and doors?

Do you believe that a used cigarette butt is trash? Or that a smoker throwing a butt on the ground is littering?

Would you mind it if I came by your place smoked a few doobs and put them out on your carpet and left them there?

WS, by pushing people in front of the building, you are causing the mess. they can easily smoke in their own apartment and keep it clean or keep it messy.

i have upstairs neighbors who leave the pamphlets on the landing for months. the new yellow pages have been there for 2 months already. what's worse ciggy butts that blow away or yellow pages soaked through with snow/rain/dirt????

there are clean people and there are dirty people, saying that every smoker is dirty and will destroy property is like saying that every non-smoker will be the best neighbor. get a grip.

99.999999999% of smokers are filth bags who like you do not see butts are trash or an annoyance (or health hazard) to other people. I say you because you didnt answer the question or whether or not a butt is littering.

And where do you think butts blow off to? Huh? They dont go away they blow into other peoples houses, windows etc. I think that butts are worse than pamphlets and yellow pages by ten thousand fold.

dude i have a nice life in this bubble - i am rich and own buildings. not sure what you are trying to accomplish here.

it is telling that you wont admit that butts are trash and littering. You have the problem that all smokers have - you think that you can throw your butts anywhere and it doesn't bother/hurt/effect people.

It does. You are rude and a filth bag. You just dont realize it.
