Discussion about
I am looking for a pied-a-terre in NYC. How is this neighborhood for a single mid 30s male who enjoys the sidewalk cafe culture and the "coolness factor" in the neighborhood
you must really really like indian buffet lunches
Hi rohdhir,
can you be more specific of the size, style, and price range you seek?
this was the place of my first apt in nyc 20 years ago. loved the hood but tons! of rats i lived on east 25th between 2nd and 3rd. i was recently there for dinner and the same .... rats!! on the side streets .. it's unfortunate because for that location you can walk almost to every where in manhattan that you need to be. maybe try a little further north or south?
E 24th street & Lex shares a Gramercy Park zip code, but little else. As earlier posts suggest, there are a lot of relatively low budget indian/curry places along Lexington from 25-30th, and Baruch College is in several buildings south of 25th Street. I would not put this area high on the "coolness factor," but it may have some benefits for a single male and "mid" 30s. The area as a whole between 23rd & 34th Street and east of Park Avenue South is relatively inexpensive for what you get, and thus has a lot of recent college/grad school transplants and there are a lot of bars lining 3rd avenue from 23rd to 35th Street that will remind you of college. This may be good or bad depending upon one's perspective.
South of 23rd, Irving Place and closer to Union Square is way "cooler" and usually more expensive. If your idea of "cool" includes 20something girls in 20something inch dresses and Gucci bags probably bought by Daddy (or on Canal Street). the East 20s and low 30s would be your definition of heaven. Twenty fourth and lex still isn't ideal, but it will certainly do.
If you want a more classic definition of "cool", unless you can afford 50 (or is it 60?) Gramercy Park North you probably want to head to Soho, Tribeca, West Village or Chelsea. Or maybe Williamsburg.
nothing cool and side walk cafeish in Gramercy. Village, soho, meatpacking should be your choices.
