Discussion about
I am closing next month on a one bedroom condo in Battery Park and would like recommendations on a furniture store in Manhattan that sells, delivers and sets-up quality furniture at a good price.

DWR - Design Within Reach is an excellent furniture store and they will deliver and setup your furniture with their white glove service option, as well as remove packing material, etc. from your apartment.

What's your style preference? DWR stuff is beautiful and sexy; prices are high.
Over the years my range has been Maurice Villency down to IKEA with Macy's and Bloomingdale's in between.
Even online stores like Overstock.com offer white glove service on some furniture items.
My last Serta mattress from Sleepy's (just over a year ago) was a disappointment. Since then we acquired an IKEA mattress for the guest room that's excellent.
Congratulations on your new condo. Good luck and have fun with your furnishing.

Worth a look is Bo Concepts.
A higher quality (and consequently a higher price) version of IKEAish wares.

Word of caution, stick to items that are in stock in the country or you could wait 6 weeks for delivery from Denmark...or is it Finland....one of those Viking countries.

A great deal depends on whether you see yourself there 1/2 years or 4/5 years.

I would stay away from the Door Store at all costs. We just got an order somewhat straightened out after almost a year. Awful awful awful.

had terrible time with west elm deliveries. room and board was a dream. at the uber high end stores i only buy floor samples because they are on sale and delivery is relatively quick.

Ethan Allen, free delivery!

to me the west elm stuff is just glorified Ikea, its going to fall apart on you. From what I saw of Room and Board, its not that far off. Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, crazy amounts of it is veneer! (And I don't mean the assemble yourself stuff). A lot of even the designer stuff is not meant to last.

Get something made of actual wood that will last. Seems more expensive but its really not.

Muji has a small selection of furniture, with clean design, functional and easy to assemble.
The kitchenware, bathroom accessories etc...are clever, well priced and of better quality than Ikea.

I like the style of Mitchell Gold. You can get it from their store on lafayette, or other retailers like ABC.

Check out Pompanoosuc Mills. Totally solid wood, custom and ready made. Reasonable prices for lifetime furniture.

What "style" of furniture?

The Stickley stuff (the furniture Stickley makes itself) is mission. Scott Jordan has a variety of styles, most notably Shaker. Pompanoosuc also has a variety, ranging from Shaker to modern.

I second Pompanoosuc Mills. We got custom-made glass cabnet bookshelves mad there and love them.

For modern furniture - definitely ABC and Jensen-Lewis. For those of thus that prefer more European styles as well, these two are good choices. Really not a fan of the classic shaker styles.

Stickley furniture now owns Nichols and Stone--which is what we bought--all made in a factory in upstate New York and finishes are custom--it is very well made-we have had it in our vacation home for years

Not to be confused, however, with Stickley's own line of furniture which it also makes Upstate.

I know, this store isn't in Manhattan, but it is a high end store. It's in Brooklyn and way down by Coney Island area on the F line, but they deal with orders for the East Coast I guess.

http://www.jesse.it/ing/products/day-collection/open-wall-unit-system.html

I like their wall units but since the products are made in Italy, it usually takes over 3 months and then add another 1 month for August (Italians don't work in August).

Not very environmentally-friendly, nor friendly to the local economy, employing foreign labor and then using OIL to ship the furniture halfway around the world ...

NYCMatt-Again--you and I are in agreement--when furnishing our BPC apartment, I made an all out effort to only buy furniture made in the USA from companies I found to be eco-friendly, family-run, etc--not an easy task but one I felt was worth the effort--thus, American leather, Scott Jordan, Stickley (and their Nichols and Stone brand) as well as some of the pieces sold by Room and Board---I am still looking for some bookcases that will fit our space and meet all my other requirements!

Fleur, don't rule out hiring your own furniture maker to build some customized bookcases for your space. They're not as expensive as you might think. In fact, if you're spending in the Stickley/Scott Jordan range already, their rates are comparable.

I always loved MDC (Metropolitan Design Center) on Broadway around 19th St, I've bought several things from them that I love. Just bought a couch that took almost 6 months to get and their customer service was horrid this time around, but overall like their stuff. Also like West Elm and have gotten a few good things at Crate and Barrel as well. I even found a bed at Raymour & Flanagan. They have a huge new store on UWS--a lot of very hideous stuff--but some nice pieces too. Happy shopping
