Whichever best discourages guests.

Why don't Americans call it a couch? Do they think it's a dirty word?

Davenport reminds me of Felix Unger. Not sure why.

Chesterfield reminds me of all my fancy relatives from Toronto.

Isn't chesterfield a very particular particular style, unlike settee, sofa, divan, couch, daybed, etc.? If not, EXCELLENT!!!

There used to be (until the mid-1980s?) an old-white-men bar on Broadway (142nd St.?) called the Chesterfield, dramatic neon sign over entry, and of course there's chesterfield the coat and Chesterfield the cigarettes. If you were clever, you could combine the three, but you'd have to bring your own chesterfield to sit on.

Is it for childrens? Not the cigarettes, the chesterfield.

Yes in the U.K, generic term in Canada (more specifically, southern Ontario).

Chesterfield, Davenport.

I learn something new every day - Chesterfield means sofa in Canada. And here thought it was a leather sofa. You know, tufted, roll arms, etc.

But back to original question - do you have an easy place to put all the sofa pillows? They're the PITA factor vs. a daybed.

Of course, there is always the divan.

(I had to look that one up for the spelling because I've only ever heard it spoken.)

Hey 10023:
I think the day bed is way more comfy then a sofa bed because of the bar. Remember the Seinfeld epi with Elaine: "STELLA".
For daybeds, check out crate & barrel & jonathan adler.
I have this one: http://www.jonathanadler.com/Lampert-Lounger-starting-at/?cat=360&initial=

There was a thread on this a while back, and it seemed as if there are some good choices for really comfortable sleep sofas out there.

Have a day bed with a pop-up trundle and is the clear winner for a spare room. It can (comfortably) serve as a king size bed for couples or two twins for visiting children. Also looks quite stylish. I'm a big fan of the day bed.

There's always the good ol aero bed. Nothin says 'make it a fast visit' like an aero bed, but, they are comfy.

"Used more as a sofa than a bed."

Go with a sofabed then.

"Daybeds" (twin-sized beds with big cushions masquerading as a sofa) are very awkward to sit on because the seat is to deep.

agreed with Matt. Daybed is a bed. Sleeper sofas are sofas. Tough to sit on a daybed.

They make some interestig comprmises tough I saw an interesting folding one at the MOMA store a few years ago.

Buy a comfortable sofa and get an air mattress for the occasional guest.

obsessed over this very decision for a guest bedroom at the shore house--went with day bed because it allows two individuals to sleep separately and my teenagers and their friends do not mind sitting on it to watch tv/play x box either. If you do wind up with a sofa bed then go with the Scott Jordan one--no bar!

after reading about the Scott Jordan sofa on SE I bought one for my new apartment in June and I highly recommend it. Already I have had houseguests who have stayed with me and have raved about the quality of the mattress...no bar and it makes for very comfy sleeping. I selected the queen size but there is a queen plus and king size as well if you are worried that a queen sleeper is too small. in fact they have all the way from cot size to king. I like also that the cushions are fitted so that when you reassemble the sofa after using the bed the cushions do not slip around. THe only drawback is that it takes four weeks to be delivered as they are made to order and they have to be shipped from Dallas where they are manufactured.

for the tiny maid's room in our apartment we bought a great sofa from Denmark at Design Within Reach that is a combo of both. it has a back bolster that flips up and then you lift off the top mattress and lay it beside the bottom. you either have an almost king or two almost twins (mattresses are 35" versus twins that are 42"). wasn't cheap but really well constructed and covers a myriad of situtions.

This is another option we are considering for our guest bed, since it can be used as a sofa, one twin, two twins, or a queen.

treetownal...that is the one i bought! it will be delivered aug 7th as sale did not start until then and i'll let you know how it works. i especially liked it because of the width, the fact that it had no arms which would make the room look even smaller, and the bolster on the back makes it especially comfortable to sit in. many of the daybeds are so wide that it compromises the sitting comfort level.

but i did buy a conventional sleep sofa for the second bedroom that we are using as a guest/den. it is an AU which is incredibly comfortable to sleep on as it does not have the bar across the middle.

Aside from being ugly, this looks incredibly uncomfortable to use as a sofa.

nycmatt, we actually sat on it and found it incredibly comfortable as the bolster hits you in just the right part of your back. and pulling it out as a bed is just so easy. it is quite good looking as well but do remember we were looking for a piece of furniture that would fit well in a room that is only 12x7 so our standards were as much about size as they were about aesthetics.

We finally moved in and got a sleeper sofa:

http://www.bludot.com/seating/sofas-sleepers/one-night-stand-sleeper-sofa.html

Great modern look even from the back, only 80 inches wide with a low clean profile-- great sleeper for small spaces.
It opens up like a book with the sofa back andarms acting as the legs of the bed. Pretty firm as sofa and bed. Queen size.

Lookpied, I have been making visits to the Blu Dot store to loll around on the same couch for weeks now, contemplating a purchase in light of expected frequent soon-to-be-grandparent visits. Did you compare it to the Diplomat?
http://www.bludot.com/seating/sofas-sleepers/the-diplomat-sleeper-sofa.html

I'm also considering the Ikea Karlstad:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89875658

Has anyone seen the Ikea sofabed in person? The Red Hook store didn't have the sleeper version on the floor, but the couch-only version was reasonably decent. I am assuming that either the baby or the cats will ruin the sofabed's aesthetics in short order, so I'm reluctant to spend much - plus, you can get covers for the Ikea.

I did not look at the Diplomat. We fell in love with the "One Night Stand" when it was featured in Dwell magazine. I spent 10 minutes in the BluDot showroom in SoHo looking at this one sofa and bought it. From the link it seems very similar to the One Night Stand. (Our kids have given it the thumbs up in terms of sleeping. )
The Ikea Karlstad's dimensions did not quite fit so we never looked at it. We needed the smallest sleeper possible for our space. The price definitely looks good. But BluDot really isn't too bad either.

Thanks, LookPied. Blu Dot's offerings are certainly more aesthetically pleasing. I may need to go loll around some more.
