Obama makes clear support for ground zero mosque By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer Erica Werner, Associated Press Writer – 31 mins ago WASHINGTON – After skirting the controversy for weeks, President Barack Obama is weighing in forcefully on the mosque near ground zero, saying a nation built on religious freedom must allow it. "As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country," Obama told an intently listening crowd gathered at the White House Friday evening to observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. "That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable." The White House had not previously taken a stand on the mosque, which would be part of a $100 million Islamic community center two blocks from where nearly 3,000 people perished when hijacked jetliners slammed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001. Press secretary Robert Gibbs had insisted it was a local matter. It was already much more than that, sparking debate around the country as top Republicans including Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich announced their opposition. So did the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights group. Obama elevated it to a presidential issue Friday without equivocation. While insisting that the place where the twin towers once stood was indeed "hallowed ground," Obama said that the proper way to honor it was to apply American values. Harkening back to earlier times when the building of synagogues or Catholic churches also met with opposition, Obama said: "Time and again, the American people have demonstrated that we can work through these issues, and stay true to our core values and emerge stronger for it. So it must be and will be today." New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent who has been a strong supporter of the mosque, welcomed Obama's words as a "clarion defense of the freedom of religion." But some victims' advocates and Republicans were quick to pounce. "Barack Obama has abandoned America at the place where America's heart was broken nine years ago, and where her true values were on display for all to see," said Debra Burlingame, a spokeswoman for some Sept. 11 victims' families and the sister of one of the pilots killed in the attacks. Building the mosque at ground zero, she said, "is a deliberately provocative act that will precipitate more bloodshed in the name of Allah." Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son was killed at the World Trade Center, said the president had failed to understand the issue. "As an Obama supporter, I really feel that he's lost sight of the germane issue, which is not about freedom of religion," she said. "It's about a gross lack of sensitivity to the 9/11 families and to the people who were lost." Added Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.: "President Obama is wrong. It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero." Entering the highly charged election-year debate, Obama surely knew that his words would not only make headlines in the U.S. but be heard by Muslims worldwide. The president has made it a point to reach out to the global Muslim community, and the over 100 guests at Friday's dinner in the State Dining Room included ambassadors and officials from numerous nations where Islam is observed, including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. While his pronouncement concerning the mosque might find favor in the Muslim world, Obama's stance runs counter to the opinions of the majority of Americans, according to polls. Opponents, including some Sept. 11 victims' relatives, see the prospect of a mosque so near the destroyed trade center as an insult to the memory of those killed by Islamic terrorists in the 2001 attacks. Racist.
The US President protecting religious freedom!? What's next...voting rights for women?
OMG
How dare the President of the United States support the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution?
WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS?
As the saying goes, "What do you expect from muslims? That's what they do. Evil as H*ll, racist, misogynist, and homophobic as a middle eastern muslim."
Just wait, when people start to shit on the graves of the 911 victims, the ignorant liberal left will cum running to defend their actions as a perfectly American and natural thing to do.
Bigotry breeds more bigotry as evidenced by the vile spewed here and on Faux News, etc.
Never heard that "saying" before. Is that a Ben Franklin quote?
Looks like the OP is wrong, Obama supports it but doesn't endorse it. Whatever that means.
Ben Quayle might not even be able to figure out the difference.
whats next? if you ask a republican probably legalized bestiality.
Who's Ben Quayle?
Well, yes ----- the person you are referring to is eminently forgettable ...... luckily he just shriveled up and went away.
Ben Quayle the second son of Dan Quayle. If you aren't familiar with him, it's worth a good amusing half hour. My favorite, and there is a LOT, is the most recent advertisement. Content aside, I don't quite know how to describe the unique delivery and tone.
i'm more intrigued by the president having a ramadan celebration in the white house. i also don't understand why he keeps what he is secret and not make a stand. while on the "View" when asked why doesn't he acknowledge that he is half white (by Barbara Walters) he avoided the question by stating "I wrote a book about this" so i guess he needs to sell books; and said that people should respect each other as an answer. When campaigning he neither denied nor confirmed his religious beliefs. As a public figure, celebrity, president of a great & free country, we have the right to know and understand who is leading us and where we are going.
Why the Muslim-bashing on your part, movinup? Come on --- it's a free country. Lay off the Muslim-bashing.
I am not familiar with construction in NYC. The grounds will be private, will they still have to use union workers? If so, I see a lot of issues and about 10 years/5x the expenses.
dogismy why do you say i am muslim bashing? i was expecting to be accused of obama bashing....
Movinup ---- your being "intrigued" with Obama honoring Ramadan (glancingly!!) at the White House has a definite whiff of Muslim-bashing on your part. Would you be "intrigued" if he honored a Jewish or Christian or Hindu holiday?
why don't we say "religion" caused 9/11 and not allow ANY places of worship within 5 miles of the WTC? I'd be happy with that.
We should ban worshipers within 10 miles of WTC. Hate the sinner, not the sin.
"We should ban worshipers within 10 miles of WTC" Religion is the curse of humanity. The masses need their opium and the 'leaders'
feed the addiction.
ironic coming from you---you worship your stupid guru and spout slogans. but, of course, you're different because you're right.
Yes it's true cc. I worship the rights of the individual.
you worship a myth as do all extremists. you define what's right and wrong for others and cloak it in your own propaganda. take a close look in the mirror at your own hypocrisy. you claim to believe in the rights of the individual except when they choose to act in a way that you don't like. then you call them names.
Individuals can do as they wish cc as long as they don't interfere with the rights of others. I know to the 'entitled' that is extremism and propaganda cc.
Who decides? You?
The individual decides for himself cc. I know that's a difficult concept in America circa 2010.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1303463/Obama-backtracks-Ground-Zero-mosque.html
So...each of us can decide what government approach we would like and vote accordingly.
> about 1 hour ago We should ban worshipers within 10 miles of WTC. Hate the sinner, not the sin.
Still waiting for this group to hate either one... right now, they're supporting Hamas, the terrorist group.
And, WHOAH, was that a major backtrack.
"This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
And then he gets shaken...
But not to have claims on others cc. Not to have mob rule and force the needs of the mob on the rights of the individual. Then you have masters and slaves cc.
"Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said Muslims 'have to build everywhere' so that followers can pray, just like Christians and Jews build their places of worship."
Except, of course, this guy wants those Jews dead and not building temples.
He's 100% for freedom of religion, except for anyone who isn't muslim.
"right now, they're supporting Hamas, the terrorist group." it seems that hamas is returning the favor

tolerating intolerance is intolerance.
I think Obama said he's forgainst
Why do we need yet another picture of this? More of your propaganda. Charming as usual.
Let's be just like Hamas and show religious intolerance and not build an Islamic Center two and a half blocks from Ground Zero.
http://nymag.com/news/articles/wtc/gallery/
Remember cc, remember......
Hey shit head. I was there. I don't need your stinking pictures.
"Let's be just like Hamas and show religious intolerance and not build an Islamic Center two and a half blocks from Ground Zero. "
If we wanted to be like hamas, we'd find some children and blow them up.
Or we would deny women all dignity.
"Hey shit head. I was there. I don't need your stinking pictures." cc You were there with the spirit of the mass murderers if you act with such disdain for the pictures.
"Why do we need yet another picture of this? More of your propaganda. Charming as usual." Pictures of September 11 propaganda in cc eyes
Obama came out in favor of the mosque and then back-tracked saying he didn't necessarily mean it should be two blocks from world trade. He's forgainst.
This mosque will never be built.
I thought I was allowed to decide for myself. Does that only extend to people who agree with you?
Now you're calling me a mass murderer? Anything in the name of your religion, right?
You have decided cc, you have shown what you are.
Were you ALSO intrigued when Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Reagan hosted muslim events? Its not like Obama is the first President to do so.
And NO you dummy, Riversider, he did not come out in FAVOR of them, he said that they had the right. he did not in either statement say it a wise decision or that it should not be done, but that all americans have the first amendment right to do so.
julialg, thank you for posting these. it seems that people really do need to be reminded exactly why this area is off limits. does no one remember that day anymore or the aftermath? fashion mags were declaring the end of high heels, that from then on women would only wear sneakers, to more comfortably run for their lives. the crowded subways were silent and when the train passed through the deserted stops like park place people would openly sob. this is short memory at the level of mental retardation.
Rent stabilizer.
Is it so hard to understand that I can acknowledge your right to exist, yet not endorse what you stand for? Is that really beyond your comprehension?
cc The muslims that cheered Sept 11 were not mass murderers but were there in spirit cc. Understand the difference?
I did not cheer.
lucillebluth... The state controlled media rarely shoe the pictures or video. All of us should look at these pictures and remember the horror.
Blah blah. Bush and everyone else said and still say "we are not at war with Islam" yet clearly you think we are. Meanwhile...up your alley
"Rush likens NYC Islamic center to building a Hindu temple next to Pearl Harbor"
Because, you know, the Japanese were all...Hindus.
http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201008160016
Some of us don't need pictures.
Perhaps we should also remember what it actually costs every time we fill up our gas tanks.
Country is confusing two issues.
We should say yes to the mosque
We should execute the 9/11 masterminds as war criminals.
More than anything the 9/11 families want justice. We know who is behind 9/11 get them and not the practicioners of their religion.
Another thing to blame Obama for.
what i also remember from that time is that the us media "protected" its viewers by staying away from footage of people jumping, whereas friends in europe told me their news agencies would roll that over and over. people jumping, people running, the true horrible human toll of that day.
FYI, we DO have a few DAILY muslim prayers at the in-house Mosque at the Pentagon, which you know, was also attacked on 9-11. Silence on this. Unless you want to tell our men and women in uniform what religion they can practice?
We also have mulsim crescents on the graves of thousands of soldiers at arlington and other miltary cemeteries. Should we dig up those dead soldiers and move their offensive graves? While we are at it, lets get rid of those atheist, wiccan, and mormon graves too. Those religions freak me out.
Just a retarded discussion IN GENERAL.
http://nymag.com/news/articles/wtc/gallery/5.htm
jason10006 It is a prayer room not a mosque at the Pentagon.
"Just a retarded discussion IN GENERAL." If we all agree with you, I'm sure it would be a brilliant discussion. By the way, there are over 100 mosques in NYC.
why is it that to defend this center at this location, one must make irrelevant and hyperbolic analogies?
"why is it that to defend this center at this location, one must make irrelevant and hyperbolic analogies?"
Best shot at getting a point through your thick heads?
ahh, gotcha. carry on, then.
'why is it that to defend this center at this location, one must make irrelevant and hyperbolic analogies?"
Like Juliag and you are not supermegahyperbolic in your posts?
The fact is, the first amendment DOES and has allowed skinheads to march through mostly black towns for neo-nazis to openly say they hate Jews and for these wierd recent "god hates fags" christian fanatic protests at soldiers' funerals. It allows Atheists to have billboards denouncing religion in general in Colorado Springs and for people hawking "cures" for homosexuality to roam around Chelsea and West Hollywood handing out pamphlets. The first amendment allows anti-abortion protesters to show pictures of fetuses to women going in to get abortions and for Glen Beck to say Obama is racist with a deep seated hatred for white people.
In short, no matter HOW offensive, the courts have repeatedly ruled people have the right to express themselves HOWEVER they like and to have WHATEVER religion they like, period.
All the rest is just hooey. We can have Satanic cults, Alien worshipping people who claim they can clone people, a South Korean man who claims to be Jesus and marries thousands at a time, and British men who write books about how its all rubbish.
All of this appeal to emotion is irrelevant. People have an absolute right to freedom of religion in this country with no qualifiers.
i don't know if you haven't read through these threads thoroughly, or if you are being willfully dense. no one here is denying that they have a legal right to build this center.
lucillebluth.. Don't worry. The mosque will never be built. The regime's leader will 'broker a deal ' with the mosque's promoters and save the day and be a hero. (Just about late October early November. ) He will be so charming and conciliatory. He will be the uniter he promised, with muslims, jews and christians all standing on stage(as props) with him.
what would you prefer to have happen?
Wouldn't a large celebrated Mosque next to ground zero decrease the chance of another attack in this location? If so, I say build four mosque's, one at each corner and let it be known through out the Middle East. I lost a friend 9 years ago, I work downtown, what about MY sensitivity to being attacked again?

It sounds like just the opposite. And if it were up to me, and I feel strongly about this - there would be NO churches, temples, mosques or ANYTHING ANYWHERE. Religion is poison, period. But then its not up to me, is it?
So unless you expect the government to stop this building, I am not sure I understand all of this discussion.
Movinup ---- your being "intrigued" with Obama honoring Ramadan (glancingly!!) at the White House has a definite whiff of Muslim-bashing on your part. Would you be "intrigued" if he honored a Jewish or Christian or Hindu holiday?
dogismy_ NOPE nothing to do with muslim, i still believe he is insecure and ineffective, he can not make a decision and stick to it as proven in the backtrack article. he says what he thinks, and when he receives negative feedback he changes his mind. he is a puppet, he is a media/celebrity whore. My comment is yes he had a ramandan dinner in the white house and supports religious freedeom but has he had an easter dinner? or a Rosh Hoshana celebration? he canceled the national day of prayer, he didn't visit the soildiers cementary in honor of our military and we are still at war. I just question his patriotism, point blank i don't trust the guy! he is not an open book and that troubles me. I don't care if he is a muslim or half black or half white, but why not stand up for it and acknowledge it, why hide it make a stand, mean what you say and say what you mean it shouldn't matter what your ratings are, you are what you are.
Agreed with Jason. We are seeing the hate and vile that religion spurs right here in the thread.
The leader of the regime didn't go to ground zero on Sept 11 2009. But two days later , he is in NYC bashing Wall Street.
regarding building the mosque/muslim center, i don't think anyone is saying that muslims cant practice their religion or build a mosque, i think what is in question is the site they are choosing. it makes people wonder if there is an alteria motive, why does it have to be there? i think anything that goes up in the 911 site needs to be sanctified, the wtc site is sacred and hallowed ground, and many plans/bldgs could be deemed inappropriate and disrespectful. i know i wouldn't be comfortable if say there was an apartment building built there, honestly who would want to live in apt bldg built on a grave site where thousands of people of all faiths racist died unexpectedly? creepy as is building a mosque there.
oops typo races not racist
"So unless you expect the government to stop this building, I am not sure I understand all of this discussion." How about the mosque's leader out of respect for the million of American who are against the mosque at ground zero move voluntarily to another site. This would create good will and show 'sensitivity" from the religion of peace.
Maybe Bloomberg can donate land next to his mansion and the mosque can be built there.
