Well, according to the US Chamber of Commerce: Today is the anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted the right to vote to women. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has decided to use this day of equal rights for women to argue that women are now to blame for unequal pay in the workplace. On the organization’s official blog, ChamberPost, Senior Director of Communications Brad Peck today makes the argument that the pay gap between men and women in the American workforce — women currently earn roughly 77 cents to every dollar a man earns — is “the result of individual choice rather than discrimination.” He argues that, instead of bold legislative action being taken to help correct this pay gap, women should pick the “obvious, immediate, power-of-the-individual solution: choosing the right place to work and choosing the right partner at home“: Unfortunately, the Chamber of Commerce has a long history of overlooking women’s struggles in America and of actively opposing movements for gender equality. While opposing the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, the Chamber argued that pregnancy was a “voluntary” act and thus should not have discrimination protections in the workplace. In 1987 it ominously warned that the Family and Medical Leave Act would set a “dangerous precedent” of employer-sponsored benefits. And last year, the organization lobbied against legislation that would allow rape victims to bring lawsuits against their employers. http://thinkprogress.org/2010/08/18/chamber-gender-pay/ [less]
I agree.
This is old. The Chamber walked this all back.
so what? The fact they put it out there in the first place means that is what they beleive.
Blame the Muslims.
Or - if you want to see how racist, sexist, homophobic, etc., the country really is - say "Blame the Jews" and watch the uproar.
So - BLAME THE WOMEN!
Blame the victims.
"so what? The fact they put it out there in the first place means that is what they beleive."
One person put it out there, not "they." The rest of them - legitimately "they" - walked in back.
Did the US Chamber of Commerce walk back yet for supporting rapists?

I recently saw a study which showed if you look at women below 30 with no children, they earn equal or more than men. I know many smart and capable women in financial services who after getting married to someone equally smart and capable (if not more), call it quits to focus on family, which in my view is personal decision. I do not personally know any smart and capable man in financial services who called it quits if his wife makes good money.

Also, there are many female doctors who choose specializations such as Pediatrician or Internal Medicine rather than becoming a surgeon which requires far more training and working hours even after you finish.
The reason why young women earn more than young men is that they are more educated. If you look at a young woman vs. a young man with the same education and background and family status and experience, that same young woman earns 90 cents on the dollar. The longer she works, the higher the differential (all other factors being controlled for.) The day she graduates, she makes less than her male counterpart in the same occupation. How is that her choice?
Maly, Do you know more men than women who chose to take a job with easier working hours because their spouse made a lot of money or for family reasons?
Women, like it or not, are much higher-maintenance employees than men, not to mention a higher investment risk.
How many MEN "choose" to quit their job after having a baby? How many MEN force their companies to hire and train temp workers to cover maternity leave each time they get a bun in the oven? How many MEN have a higher absentee rate due to children's sniffles, daycare issues, school issues, or just women's health issues in general?
Men are 100% reliable. Women -- as a group -- sad to say simply are not.
Men are 100% reliable, you say?
Matt, you're 90% moronic.
So the reason men make more than women with equal qualifications is a function of biology (only women get pregnant) and social organization (women have greater family responsibilities), coupled with assumptions that as a group they are more likely than men to have to balance work and family, so that even single, childless women are viewed as less valuable (never mind most workers don't stay at one job more than 7 years.) We can all agree then.
NYCMatt: I can only hope you are drunk and trying to be provocative after some boss has abused you. Otherwise, you show an ignorance that makes the tea party people who believe Obama is a Muslim look like Rhodes Scholars (shall I tell you what that is or would you prefer the respite of your ignorance?)
maly, I agree with social organization part but woman have a choice to sacrifice time with their families which men have done for ages. Why should businesses be blamed for discrimination due to social choices made by individuals? Pregnancy only needs a couple of months off which does not impact the career.
Shall we send the orphans to Russia? Who's going to take care of the nanny, if women sacrifice their family time?
fathers or day care. my point is that it not the businesses who discrimanate but it is the social choices made by COUPLES.
“the result of individual choice rather than discrimination.” He argues that, instead of bold legislative action being taken to help correct this pay gap, women should pick the “obvious, immediate, power-of-the-individual solution: choosing the right place to work and choosing the right partner at home“:
Maly, So agree with the above from the Chamber of Commerce??
Sorry, my 7 minutes of free education for the great unwashed are over. You'll have to figure out what I meant for yourself. Family time!
Maly, that is avoiding the fact that women blame discrimation for wage gap rather than personal choices.
In any case, this is a real estate discussion board. Hope every had a little fun.
