"FHFA raises concerns about White House's approach to housing.... ...Officials at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are voicing concerns about whether the government should continue to play a significant part in housing. FHFA Acting Director Edward DeMarco said he is unsure about the White House's strategy for overhauling housing finance. "Recently there has been a growing call for some form of explicit federal insurance to be a part of the housing finance system of the future," DeMarco said in prepared testimony for the House Financial Services Committee. "The potential costs and risks associated with such a framework have not yet been fully explored...."" - The Washington Post (9/15)

It will be difficult for private lenders to compete with Fannie & Freddie. Will be interesting to see how they handle this. The Democrats aren't exactly known as "free market" thinkers...

It was Paulsen/Bush et al who socialized Fannie, Freddie, and AIG for that matter. And Bush, Reagan, and Bush were just fine helping Fannie & freddie expand their roles. These are not democratic creations either, they are children of both parties.

Market's froze up, leaders of either party would have done the same, but now that the problems are less immediate, the solutions might be expected to vary more...
