Discussion about
My first post seems to not have gone through, but I'd like to know what streets/buildings are multi-ethnic or good for a woman of color? I hate to bring up race, but truth is a lot of the nicer doorman buildings I see, I notice mostly caucasian people living there and I don't want to be the only or one of the people of color. I prefer to live in a multi-ethnic street/building. I've lived in central harlem and don't like it too much, so I'd like to focus on Morningside, early to mid 100s...Also, looking for something reasonably priced...pets and doorman preferable. Any advise?

This is actually supposed to go under rentals but it went into sales by mistake. I'm looking to rent not buy. Thanks.

mismeme, I suggest finding an area/street/building that you like & hanging out in the 'hood; sit in the cafe, talk to shopkeepers & neighbors & see how it feels. I'm white but I'd like to think you're making too much of this. Choose a building, move in, make it multi-ethnic & start a trend.

These threads are always fun.
Your definition of "safe" will make a huge difference for knowing how to answer.

I don't know what you mean by "Morningside", but if Morningside Heights is out of your price range, I highly recommend the couple of blocks just east of Morningside Park, from Morningside Avenue to 8th Avenue. There are a bunch of new-construction doorman rental buildings, and it's a very pleasant little area.

I'm not crazy about Central Harlem either, but the area I described has a totally different vibe.

I agree with drdrd, live where u want and diversify the place. With the exception of Park Ave, can't imagine anyone having an issue with it.

Yorkville has some doorman bldgs. that are pretty safe...1700 York Avenue had a studio last year for $1700. (i don't know what it is this year)..if interested go to the bldg. and speak with the doorman...they ususally know what's going on in the bldg.

I wonder how this thread would go if it were a white person stating they don't want to live in a building full of people "of color"?

I think in the city the nicer/more expensive the building the less minorities you'll see. I would either look for luxury buildings that are obligated to set aside a certain % of units for lower income families, or older buildings in areas with mostly minorities. I'm sure there are better parts in harlem you can live in. But if you consider living in bk you'll have more options

"I wonder how this thread would go if it were a white person stating they don't want to live in a building full of people 'of color'?"

People would be shouting RACISM! RACISM!

Although it's so obvious that a white person wouldn't want to live in that building, the question wouldn't even be asked. The racism issue usually comes up when people say it's not safe to live in a white building next to buildings full of people of color. Like those new condo towers unfortunately located in downtown Brooklyn.

So let me get this straight: she wants to rent in a nicer doorman building in Morningside Heights, but not one of the ones that are scary because they are full of Caucasians?

Yes, that is racialist.

let's say the color is green. Not that Darian kelly green or the italian olive green but, more like an avocado green. Now where would it be safe to live? I'm thinking if that's you color then Williamsburg is the safest place for you. Most folks that visit this special place for the first time get that queezy right off the bat and those that stay end up Newtown creek green which is just a touch off avocado green. I assume you mean safe from preditors. Well it just does not get safer than Williamsburg where everyone who does not turn green from envirnmental toxins will eventually turn green with envy. Not the cute Kirmit the Frog green...more avocado...like you!

Let's say the color is purple...

white - uptown & williamsburg & wall street & anywhere where there is a whole foods
black - harlem, bronx, & brooklyn except williamsburg (unsafe for all non-whites)
yellow - chinatown or ktown/flushing
brown - jackson heights or corona, depends on the type of brown...actually anything in queens should do
pink - chelsea
olive - staten island, jersey, bensonhurst/bayridge
red - coney island/brighton beach
green - along central park or tribeca/soho

This is stupid. Worst idea in the world to ask a racially sensitive question on an internet board, streeteasy no less. How about u go to different neighborhoods or meet some of the people you would want to hang out with and ask them?

I'm guessing this was all a joke - hence my stupid reply.

For the record, even though it means absolutely nothing except that I need spf 80 in the summer time to avoid darkening further - I am one of the coloreds as well!

I invite JuiceMan to buy my condo, (or any other brother/sister of color);
No problem, if you have the financials.
And then rent it out to you. (or any other brother/sister of color ).
Pets, O.K. Doorman 24/7.

Please, Do not feel inferior.
If you can afford to buy, then buy.

If you can afford to rent, then please rent.

My comment above is an OBSERVATION of how other people behave. I guess noticing how other people behave makes one a "bigot."

I hope for her sake that the OP doesn't work for NPR, cause if so she'll soon find herself out of a job.

naturally, she'd be quite welcome at fox, as a poster-child person of color who subscribes to the racist bigotry espoused by so many fox "journalists"--to reinforce the "see, blacks are racists, too" POV they love to put out

and it's highly likely the OP is a very white, very bigoted imposter, who has invented a poster child for streeteasy to feed on

you people are ridiculous.

i love how you change what she wrote to make it sounds racist. she did NOT say, as juiceman mis-paraphrases, that she doesn't "want to live in a building full of (white) people." she explicitly says she wants to live in a multi-ethnic building. She doesn't say she wants to avoid a building "full of (white) people." She wants to avoid a building with ONLY white people. I'm Caucasian myself, and I wouldn't want to live in a building with only white people either. Or a building with only black folks. Or only latinos. or only gays. or only straights. or only old people. or only young people. like mismeme, i value diversity, and i would always prefer to live in a diverse building.

how in the world can it be considered racist to want to live in a multi-ethnic building? instead of jumping down this woman's throat and purposefully misreading and misinterpreting her comments, why not try to be helpful?

happyrenter, this is what was said in the OP.

"I notice mostly caucasian people living there and I don't want to be the only or one of the people of color"

I simply asked a question on how the thread would be interpreted of the words were reversed. So there is no misquoting, how do you think a thread that started out like this would be accepted?

I notice mostly people of color living there and I don't want to be the only or one of the only Caucasian's

What do you think happyrenter? Is the first version different than the second version? Do you think one would get a different reaction than the other?

"I notice mostly caucasian people living there and I don't want to be the only or one of the people of color"

Yes, and in contrast, white people are RACIST when they say "I notice mostly black people living in that neighborhood, and I don't want to be the only or one of the only white people." Of course, that's how white people actually behave, it's just RACIST to say it.

Let's say your teal colored.

Now we have issues...

I'm thinking Jersey City. Teal might not be an exact Jersey match but, I think it will produce the safest enviornment for a women of this color. I've seen a lot of teal in NJ. Just move in, start cracking gum and do your best 'Snookie' and all will be right with the world (except you're in NJ).

I did not say she was racist, just a bit racialist. A bit. I personally would rather have a nice unit with a W?D in-unit, new bath and kitchen, doorman, possibly a nice in-bldg gym, near public transit and supermarkets, convenient to work. I can't say I have taken the race of neighbors up with rental agents or brokers, ever in my life. Ever.

In my building there are people of many colors, except black.

People from India, Asia, South America, Middle Eastern countries. (No Israelis)
My friend's daughter goes to Columbia. She and her parents live in a building a few blocks away from me.
They are people of color: black. They have other black neighbors living in their building.

Since I'm going out of town for a month, their daughter will be staying in my apartment. Starting tonight. She hopes to get an apartment of her own in this neighborhood after she graduates. So this apartment-sitting arrangement works well for us both.

Only the condo board of managers and the super don't like it. The super hates black people more than he hates Jewish people. Too bad for them.

I get you mismeme. No idea where you should go, but people are attacking you and that is not fair. You never know, it might be an all white building where people are cool with people of color or an all white building where they are all old racists, and you just don't know before you move since you don't do an interview with a board, so you just don't want to have to be tiptoing around just in case. Be free! Be you! Be mismeme! LOLOL
Your point of view is understandable but of course it is not ideal that you or others have to feel that way. Ignore the people who say otherwise. If a white person said it it might definitely be racist but when you say it is self consciouness because you are afraid of possible racism. Good luck mismeme.
