Looks like yet ANOTHER thing steve was wrong about.

LICC, what buildings are popular with the young families? Is there a lot of large apartment inventory?

"I can go to Manhattan the motherland and feel that 100-mile-per-hour energy in minutes," says Juan Sierra, a furniture restoration artisan who moved to the neighborhood three years ago from the lower East Side. "It's electric there. Here is like a shutoff button."

HAHAHAHAHA!

Juice - if I'm wrong about Long Island City, then you should move there. Not only does LICC get his economic theory from the Post, he gets his real-estate from the Daily News.

You know, we have a baby, and are considering moving to LIC in 1.5 years based on things I've read and heard about it from a fellow mom who does live there (mainly, Gantry park, schools are not great but good/solid). Does anyone know what a 3 bedrooms in a doorman building would be (renting not buying). I think I saw some good places for around $3300 or so......

Whoa! LICC = Grammarian of the Year!

"there IS a good NUMBER of two-bedroom apartments...."

And about dem bonuses:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/04/nyregion/04bonus.html

Taxes on this year's bonuses are payable as part of this year's taxes, if the payment occurs through the March 15 of next year. That's why the state is so interested in them NOW, not next year. That is not the case for bonuses paid in restricted stock.

steve, you are a laughingstock. I'm almost feeling sorry for you, except that you just keep making it worse on yourself by not admitting that what you said was idiotic.

The state is worried because when bonuses are paid, in early 2011, they are subject to withholding taxes at that time which fill the state coffers. That has nothing to do with the employee reporting that income in 2011, when it is paid, and not 2010, which is absurd.

The articles you cite don't even support what you claim. You really do live in a bizarro world.

Would be an interesting strategy for a couple buildings in LIC to cater to families. Family stock in Manhattan is slim and a lot of it it is junk. Could be a better alternative than Brooklyn or the suburbs.

JM - that would be such a good option for families, esp for ours where we both commute to midtown daily. We're priced out of 3 bedrooms in Manhattan/Park Slope (not that I love the Park Slope commute anyway) and loathe LI/NJ/burbs. I have heard conflicting things about Astoria. If someone could do the Battery Park like buildings (doorman, playroom) in LIC I'd be so interested.

The LIC bashing is stupid. I lived in Hunter's Point for a while; I'll never have a view that awesome again (and I have a pretty awesome view now). There are truly good restaurants there now, and you can get to a Midtown job in 15-20 minutes door to door from a lot of places. The condo buildings skew relatively young, so there's a lot of socializing. The waterfront park is great. Hate on it all you want, but the neighborhood has definitely hit the critical mass of yuppie amenities and will keep improving.

Steve is half right. If you are a partner at say KKR, lazard, or cantor, your distributions for 2010 are taxable as 2010 income even if paid in 2011. however, BONUSES, stock sales, or anything paid by a purely public co like BAML or GS counts in the year it's paid. Steve must have had K-1 income at some point and is confused.

Juice, I appreciate your role here as a balance-seeking contrarian, but you really should take a good, long walk around all of LIC before you suggest it as a family-friendly option. While I'm sure you're looking forward to JuiceBaby enjoying his adolescence with visits to Central Park, Riviside Park and Lincoln Center, bike rides in Hudson River Park (which will get him to Chelsea Piers quickly), etc., etc., if you moved to LIC you would only want to live in one small area around Gantry Park, and you wouldn't want him walking more than a few blocks from home.

There are good things about LIC, but these puff pieces that get published a few times years really should be presented as advertising supplements rather than journalism.

And where people actually like to live, as well.

Riker's Island has less pollution and a lower sickness rate than LIC - don't mean I want to go there, either.

The Long Island City Triangle: bounded by the Newtown Creek, the Queensbridge Houses, and the LIRR train yard. It even has a G Spot at Court Square, but it's closed this weekend.

"tenemental tries to put down LIC by comparing it to the entire west side of Manhattan."

The point is that Juice's kid will have easy access to the entire west side of Manhattan, while kids raised in LIC are hemmed in by train tracks, a toxic body of water, and an enormous, dangerous public housing complex, with plenty of desolate streets in between.

The family-friendly thing seems more geared to the parents than the kids, at least once they enter their roaming years.

Though if this architecture critic wants to agree with me, I'll let her go ahead:

"But here the island metaphor is taken too far as the Murano sits in a desolate landscape, albeit one with potential, bordered by the Long Island Rail Yards and vacant industrial buildings and is within eyeshot of the air intake tower of the Queens Midtown Tunnel. A moat in a moribund landscape does not an oasis make but the developer of the Murano would perhaps like its buyers to think so."

tenemental, to say the area is "hemmed in by train tracks" is ridiculous. Unless you are right near the el, which is only by Queens Plaza, or the train yard, you are not affected. And no one is "hemmed in".

As for a "toxic body of water", none of the condos are on Newtown Creek. The waterfront is the East River.

Your "enormous, dangerous public housing project"s are all interspersed in Manhattan too, and the one in LIC is on the other side of the Queensboro bridge. It really has zero affect on the Hunters Point area.

Desolate streets??? That is clueless.

LICC - your ignorance precedes you! As I said, and as the tax law said, non-stock cash bonuses, like dividends, are taxable in the year they are declared, not the year they are paid, provided that they are paid by March 15 of the next year. It's in the tax code, dummy.

And I'm sorry you don't like the maps and pics that contradict what you say about your Fatherland, but it's surrounded by train tracks and projects and it's desolate. Sorry, the proof is in the - contaminated water.

OK, LICC, I'll go through the motions. Let's dial up Google maps.

"tenemental, to say the area is "hemmed in by train tracks" is ridiculous. Unless you are right near the el, which is only by Queens Plaza, or the train yard, you are not affected. And no one is "hemmed in"."

I said the area was hemmed-in by a combination of things, one of them being train tracks, by which I meant the LIRR. You reach them walking just a few blocks south or a few more blocks east from Gantry Park. You can walk north from Gantry Park, but I can't imagine many parents wanting their kids on those barren streets. Of course, if they keep going, they hit the el, and then Queensbridge.

"As for a "toxic body of water", none of the condos are on Newtown Creek. The waterfront is the East River."

No, but I was talking about kids when they're old enough to explore the neighborhood. Newton Creek is a short walk from its one nicely developed section.

"Your "enormous, dangerous public housing project"s are all interspersed in Manhattan too, and the one in LIC is on the other side of the Queensboro bridge. It really has zero affect on the Hunters Point area."

Yes, but the subject was kids, and the fact that they will eventually reach an age where they want to travel beyond their immediate area, which in the case of Hunters Point is very small. Once you wander from the Hunters Point area, the LIRR tracks to the south and east and the projects to the north set your boundaries, with lots of desolation in between. (You know, the areas that aren't "the main part of LIC.")

No question there are pjs all over Manhattan, but usually you have some good walking options in the other direction.

"Desolate streets??? That is clueless."

Not according to that architect, or anyone willing to walk or bike a little ways from Hunters Point, or Google Street View (I just dropped the little guy at random on 44th Drive and 11th Street, yikes).

Go less than a half mile outside Gantry Park in any direction and you will not find streets where parents will be happy to have their kids and their friends hanging out.

now steve, in all fairness, the waterfront shot you provided looks that way for a reason:
it's the site of the huge project being built, the project many hope will be stalled, so as to delay years of construction followed by overcrowding with people paying 200$/foot for "waterfront" where LICC paid 832$/foot at peak

so best case the "waterfront gets left that way...for a while

how do i deal with the shame that i rent, and will now go for a run in central park?

anyone suggest a shrink?

There is exactly ONE nice street in Long Island City - the one that faces the water. All else is Hell. In fact, I think it was used for certain triage scenes in M*A*S*H, if I'm not mistaken.

Medieval enthusiasts - aka "Goths" - are fond of LIC b/c it gives them an opportunity to walk around rusting in their armored suits, where safety is the #1 concern.

Juicy - can we see that snap of the Juicelet playing in some of LIC's parks? You know, a "Family Moment"!

Funny, I have been reading these comments on LIC for a while. I moved to LIC about a year ago and it is funny how some people continue to comment on it and most have clearly not been here for a while. I can understand if some people relate it back to their less fortunate roots and want to keep it in their past, but many of these links are completely ill informed. For starters, the above link of murray playground, which along with the other 6 parks in an 8 block radius, has been recently overhauled (anyone who has actually lived here for the past year would realize that the google maps link is completely outdated - new link below of the same place):

http://www.liqcity.com/neighborhood/long-island-citys-murray-park-gets-a-facelift-new-ball-field-and-playground#full

And that is not LIC's premier park but rather on the outskirts and one of many new parks in the area - funny enough, even that one is better than most in the city now.

and that the previous link that states "desolate area" broke ground about 3 months ago to what will soon become a 10 acre extension of the waterfront park and new school:

http://www.liqcity.com/community/behold-lics-hunters-point-south-middle-high-school-manifests

anyhow, while people sit back and continue to talk about LIC (who supposedly have not interest in it), others are forming lives and families here and it is actually surprising how it is, in fact, quickly becoming one of the most desirable areas in the city for young families.

And the desolate area that has just broken ground on phase 1 to become the below waterfront park:
http://www.nycedc.com/ProjectsOpportunities/CurrentProjects/Queens/HuntersPointSouth/Documents/HPS_Presentation.pdf

and an actual picture of the lot that you posted from google images (now updated and broken ground) - if you want to speak with knowledge then please don't use 2 year old google maps images as reference for an area that is changing by the day:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/liqcity/4311891990/

The real change is that places are now opening and people are actually coming from other parts of the city to enjoy them (ate here just today and people were taking cabs and getting off the subway from Manhattan to try (45 minute wait). It's actually sad in a way now that it is becoming discovered because now we have to share it with the rest of the city:

"Mr"?????

I don't know why everyone is assuming it's a man.

I picture a big, brassy upper middle-aged woman. Woman, not lady, not girl, not broad, not gal, woman. As in "woman's sizes". With clown-dyed hair in a "hairdo". With big gaudy gold-tone jewelry on a big gaudy novelty-colored dress suit or pants suit or the like. And vaudeville makeup to match, of course. Lives in a scared-white-woman neighborhood like Yorkville or one of those beige areas on the eastern side of midtown.

Powdery makeup that accentuates every wrinkle and sag.

In LICC's bizarro world, real evidence is laughable: Google Maps is wrong because it doesn't have a picture of that new Duane Reade! And all the desolate streets in Long Island City have miraculously turned into luxury high-rises beaming with happy yuppie families.

Even though the evidence is quite the opposite.

The interesting thing is why steve is so obsessed with Long Island City. If he wants to sit in his dumpy little rental on 8th Avenue and 52nd and be happy, good for him. But it is weird that he is so bothered by all the young, fun, professional and creative people that are happy with LIC's new buildings, new restaurants, cafes and shops (not to mention the great old-time restaurants that have been in the area), beautiful waterfront, parks and piers, great mix of neighbors, great views, quick commutes, PS1 Museum and other arts and theater activities, community activities, etc.

Beside being foolishly wrong on just about everything he posts (the year of reporting your bonus for tax purposes being the latest of a multitude of his incorrect assertions), he just seems like an insecure, bitter old man.

"obsessed with Long Island City"???? Who started this thread? Whose username indicates a singular obsession with Long Island City? Has stevejhx ever started a thread about Long Island City? Has alanhart?

You are truly deranged, LICcomm. No offense at all, I'm just saying. Maybe it's the toxin-induced braincell die-off. Call Poison Control.

i cant speak for steve, but i have found it entertaining to read your shillery and respond--and it performs a service for those who hope to get an objective POV re as serious a commitment of funds that real estate is.

you are currently riding out a bad investment in LIC--in the attempt to bring in greater fools and lessen the financial pain you have dealt yourself, you shill like a mofo

it's fun to make you dance--tho you seem to be having synapse troubles--the toxins??

i find it mildly entertaining, and minimally time consuming--and little bit about good citizenship

obsessive---NOT

You have a weird definition of "objective POV". Uninformed POV would be more like it.

All I did was post an article about LIC. Then the ignorant haters came out, who don't even know anything about the area, to insult it.

My 2 cents: I find LICComment to be pretty boorish at times and a bit disingenuous about the quality of life in his neighborhood, but LIC is (hopefully obviously) not nearly as bad as steve and alan portray it. But the neighborhood bashing bs is so tired - the amount of time steve has spent finding links, cutting and pasting, and generally talking about LIC demands a compromised social life at this point. Not to mention it's pretty annoying after a while. JuiceMan is spot on.

Well said BJW. I don't think that you have to worry. Anyone who has read more than one post on this site knows that a few people spend 98% of their social life on this site and are probably not the kind of people that any normal human being would consult for any advice (maybe with the exception of the functions of this website).

And Wbottom, to say that any point of view that you or Steve (or a few others) provide is "objective" is just as ridiculous as saying that LICC is completely objective. A balanced POV comes from a well informed balanced point of view ... not an absurd argument to the other extreme. It just means that no one takes either of you seriously ... which is funny considering that you seem to spend half of your lives trying to convince people of things on this site.

Try hanging out with some real people rather than spending half of your lives trying to get LICC's goat on a virtual cyber space. But who knows, different things make different people happy.

Alanhart...I never thought those letters to Penthouse were true until...

'I picture a big, brassy upper middle-aged woman. Woman, not lady, not girl, not broad, not gal, woman. As in "woman's sizes". With clown-dyed hair in a "hairdo". Bobby G., R.I.P. spanx for the memories.

Civic-minded business leaders oppose still MORE train tracks in Long Island City, comparing LIC to Staten Island:
