Discussion about 900 West End Avenue in Upper West Side
Yes, it is the day after Christmas and there is no heat. Stay away from this landlord.
Call 311 and report the lack of heat. Supposedly the city is cracking down this year on landlords who do not supply heat and/or hot water.
Any more recent thoughts on this building? Has the heating issue been resolved? How responsive is the landlord? Any happy tenants in the building?
The minimum heat is supplied, and it will remain this way. If you complain, your lease is not renewed. All the tenants are delightful and we are grateful to have an appartment in this tough economy, but the landlord wants to supply the least and charge the most. Stay away if you have a choice.
24 degrees today, 12/11/2014, and no heat.
Sorry, I meant 12/11/2013 of course.
Is it really true that there's no heat at all in the entire building?
rstern366: Have you filed a complaint with the city? If so, what was the outcome?
Why are you still there? Move!
Did the heat issue ever get resolved?
The city requires that a landlord heat a building to 68 degrees from morning to night, and only 55 degrees after 10pm. They are within their legal right to keep the building cold and provide just enough heat so that the minimum is maintained, about an hour of heat in the morning and another hour in the evening.
Many of my neighbors in other buildings live in apartments heated to 75 to 80 degrees, which would be the decent thing to do.
Sometimes they may go a day or two without sending any heat up. They can get away with it because by the time the city investigates, the temperature in the building is back up to 68 degrees. Imagine how much money they are saving!
Some of the tenants here like the colder feel, but most of us don't. I had neighbors who were putting their kids to bed in sweatpants and sweatshirts. They did move.
I can't afford to make a move right now.
So if you don't mind a colder apartment, move right in. But if you expect your place to be toasty, stay away from this building.
75-80 degrees!! You're out of your mind. Maybe you need to see a doctor if you're that cold. I was just in that building the weekend of Dec 14 visiting a friend (that was weekend of last snow storm in city). She had her windows cracked open because it was too warm.
75 to 80 degrees, that's really funny.
January 4th, 2016. 28 degrees outside and so far no heat all day.
So what is the temperature in your apartment now?
The temperature in this building tends to stay at around 68 degrees when it is cold outside. It might drop to 63 degrees after 10pm which is thoroughly legal.
If you don't mind a cool apartment then you should be happy renting here.
Otherwise, if you like it a little warmer you will need space heaters.
And don't bother complaining to the landlord. They will just wait until your lease is up and not renew it because you have become a nuisance tenant.
rstern366 you're still living there after complaining about the building and landlord for 7 years?!
What is keeping you there for the last 7 years. 68 degrees does seem cold. Low 70s is probably what people expect during waking hours.
There does seem to be a decent amount of turnover in the building.
I've lived here for 2 years and havent had any issues with the heat. In fact, I generally keep the windows cracked all winter long. Building staff have been very helpful with whatever minor issues we have had. I absolutely love this building.
rstern366, just report this building to NYC DOB for heating violation
