Discussion about
I am moving back to NYC after 3 years in California. I would like to bring my car back with me - does anyone have any recommendations for companies that ship cars across the country? Or should I pay someone to just drive it back? Ideas?
I used the same moving company to move my furniture and car. I wasn't very satisfied with them, so no recommendation, but I'll say one thing about the car moving plan: within a few months, I really wished I had sold my car instead of moving it. Owning a car in NY is about as expensive and time-consuming as owning a dog, without any slobbering kisses. Especially nowadays, with the option of Zipcar, I would think twice about this plan.
I would ship it. Having someone drive it cross country does not sounds like a good idea, never mind economical.
"Horseless Carraige" are top rate car carriers. More economical you can check for open-trailer movers like Leaseway. Plenty of them online and they're hungry so negotiate the rate. Good luck and welcome to NY
I hate to add a comment that doesn't directly answer your question, but I second what maly said in regard to selling... UNLESS you are moving to a borough other than Manhattan OR absolutely need it for work.
The amount of money you will spend on insurance, parking, tickets, misc damages (oh, there will be damages) and gas will end up being leaps and bounds more than what it would cost to pretty much take a cab whenever you needed to and semi-frequently when you didn't.
It's nice to have a car, but Manhattan isn't the city for it mainly because we have a damn good public transit system (one of the very few that runs 24/7). Also, you will get a much better price for your car in CA than you will here.
And hey, welcome back :)
To ship your car from coast to coast will cost no more than $1,000.00. You can google car transportation services.
Coincidentally, I used Horseless Carriage a couple of years ago, the were very good, picked up and dropped off on time. Very professional. You should definitely check out www.transportreviews.com there's alot of good info. I basically looked at about 10 companies, sent them e-mails asking for quotes, about 6 got back to me, all were fairly close in price, I picked Horseless Carriage because they had good reviews and they were very quick with a reasonable quote. Also, many companies like DAS simply outsource their business to independent contractors with varying quality, so be careful.
Open transport is alot cheaper than covered transport and double-check your insurance. And I'm not sure about this, but I bet they won't deliver in Manhattan given the size of the carrier.
Make sure you check out BBB before using any vendors. Saw an Arnold Diaz report about some company taking people's car and deposit and never delivered the goods.
I used Intercity Lines many years back to do CA to NY. They only do enclosed transport, treated the car extremely well on the pickup and dropoff, and were very professional / prompt. If you've got a "special" car, they're a good choice. The cost was somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500: Doing CA to NY in the winter is cheaper than other times / directions. They drop the car off outside Manhattan (I picked mine up at a NJ Turnpike rest stop).
As to having a car in the city, it's pretty much the same as you knew 3 years ago. I'm not sure why people are projecting their needs / preferences / financials onto you: you obviously know the story about cars and NYC. I don't have exact comps, but parking seems generally cheaper these days. You might want to check out bestparking.com. Great for monthly, but really great on an phone for those infrequent in-city drives.
I used Alligance Auto Shipping to move car to FL. Was $600.
