Discussion about
would like to replace the old radiators in our loft. Any resources on stores to purchase modern or smaller units which provide the same distribution and heat as the old one? Alternatively any good carpenter who can build cabinets around the old one?

I think you need more then a carpenter to build the radiator cover. You would be much better off with a millshop or there are places that make them but are not custom

I recently changed one of my radiators and modernized it and am very happy with the results. Got my super what he needed and he took care of it. If you are bringing it in yourself, the radiator is very heavy so plan on having someone help you bring it in. Also make sure you ask the store for all the things you will need to install it (some of the radiators need plugs etc.). In the process I replaced the valves also, good move as it is MUCH easier to open and close them.

i had old radiators sand blasted for 75 bux each, primed/painted them with radiator paint (immediately following sandblast to avoid rust), and then put new valves/fittings on them for a few bux more--and they really look nice, as new--of course the floors surrounding the radiators were ok, which is oft not the case

if your floor is bad, fix any leaks, and go with a rediator cover, this will cover up the bad floor area--there are many companies which sell a variety of stock designs/sizes with good value--custom millwork will cost at least 3X what stock will

our floors are perfect. I am trying to reduce the size and move into a modern / commercial look that will enable me to install ceiling to floor curtains. Soha- any web site with pictures of steam radiators? i know that the room is very large (700sqf) so we need to evaluate the output of a smaller steam radiator. I am searching the web and nothing interesting come around. Any leads?

Hi Primer,
I love the look of runtals. Do they work well? Better than the old radiators?

My old, large radiators with original covers are my favorite place to sit in the winter :-) One unit is a good 6 feet long and sometimes I'll just stretch out like Snoopy on it. I'd never want smaller radiators that I couldn't stretch out on but I'm obviously an odd duck ;-)
