Discussion about
I'm interested in buying an apartment in a large (10+ units) building in Park Slope. 8th ave or Prospect Park West, between Union and 5th street, preferably. I've noticed that most of the larger buildings seem to have a doorman. To me, that is an unnecessary and expensive amenity, Can anyone recommend some good, non-doorman buildings?

You might want to walk around the blocks you like, write down the address and look them up on SE for what apartments are available.

You either must stay at home all day or NEVER get packages delivered to your home.

Must be nice.

Easy solution for package pick-up problem:

After receiving those post-it notes saying the delivery was unsuccessful, request to do a pick-up near your home or your work area store (whichever is more convenient - a la package size, weight, quantity).

I use to do this all the before doorman/concierge/frontdesk buildings. I'd rather save myself a significant portion of my monthly common charge by doing this.

This only works if your parcel is small enough to carry for many blocks (or onto the subway).

Do you really need to pay $300-$500 a month for someone to receive the one package per month that you receive? Do you really need someone to hold the door open for you? (who most of the time will just sit at a desk and not actually hold the door open for you.)

NYCMatt, I hope you pay the guy who wipes you a@@ good money too.

It's not just one package per month. I get several packages a month. Plus Fresh Direct deliveries. Plus laundry and dry cleaning deliveries. Plus department store deliveries. Plus certified, registered, and overnight mail. It's nice never having to arrange your schedule to THEIR schedule, and knowing that someone will always be there to accept delivery all the time.

NYCMatt, don't your house guests take care of all that?

They're not always around to accept parcels.

matt, would you pls offer comments, on the "obnoxious buyer" thread, on what your likely experience would be were you to have a buyer's broker negotiate a deal on your behalf??

There would be no "likely experience" because it simply would never happen.
