Discussion about
Trying to decide if we keep the car or ditch it (and opt for a Zip Car plan). Any insights into what we can expect to pay for basic (liability) insurance on a run-of-the mill (2005 Nissan Altima) vehicle in Manhattan and surrounding boroughs?
You can get quotes from many insurance companies by spending about ten minutes on their respective websites -- Geico, Allstate, State Farm, etc. Parking may end up being more of a dealbreaker than insurance though, depending on your neighborhood.
I was just quoted $150 month.
For just liability, my rate got down to $700-800 a year from GEICO.
$1,000 theft & collision from GEICO. but took max deductible.
I'm assuming everyone's in Manhattan? Any your cars are garaged? This is all new to me since you don't have to deal with those nuances in the Midwest.
My quote is for a brand new car. They did not ask if it was garaged or not.
If you don't garage get used to a lot of moving spots. Streets in most areas seem to be safe these days but every now and then you get the inexperienced driver renting a u-haul van causing damage to parked cars. Add to that sanitation trucks that just don't care. Streets are best for old junk cars(not that garages don't ding and scratch too).
Last I checked, Manhattan was lower than most outerboroughs areas ... dense slow-getaway traffic and a high rate of garaging means cars are less likely to be stolen (comprehensive) and then joy-rided, causing death and destruction (liability). They didn't ask about garaging, surprisingly, but they did about usage (commuting, miles per year estimate).
If you have any assets or ever hope to, you need max coverage, plus an umbrella policy, to cover the worst reasonably imaginable scenario. It's not outrageously expensive compared to the minimum. But compared to sparsely populated, low-theft areas, yes.
NEVER let anyone borrow your car, because NY puts all liability on the car owner and highway signage, etc., can be unbelievably bad in this area.
Now, time for a big fight about state laws regarding torts and the like.
Good point about umbrella coverage. It's very cheap and well worth it.
For us in Manhattan, Geico was much cheaper than anyone else.
For our old crappy car with minimal coverage it was like $275 for 6 months in a locked lot.
We just financed a new car ~20K and it went up to %550 for 6months.
FWIW I ditched our two cars upon moving to Manhattan 2 years ago ... went Zipcar ... couldn't be happier. They have BMW's! Just be prepared for the rental car rates in August when you head out East! Ykies! Even with that we save substantially compared to having two cars in the burbs.
Remember that even if you have a car in the city most of the time you'll be taking cabs, busses & Subways anyways ... cars are for trips to outer buroughs and out of town ... in town you'll mostly leave it parked.
Your're pretty much gonna be stuck paying high rates in NYC no matter what.
Average rates in NYC are high. Expect to pay $3000+ per year.
In fact, the list of top 10 places with the most expensive auto insurance rates included Brooklyn and the Bronx, where annual car insurance premiums averaged $3,819 and $3,443 respectively
