Discussion about
I'm thinking of using a 24" stove instead of 30" when remodeling to increase cabinet space (am also switching from 24" d/w to 18") and plan to install an over the range microwave to save counterspace. The cabinet over the 24" stove will be 24". Most over the range microwaves are 29-30". Did anyone have difficulty finding a 24"wide over the range microwave with a built in fan? So far, I've only see one manufacturer that makes them, LG .

I'm happy with the LG 22" OTR microhood that I've been using since August, except for the vent (but those are known to be worse on all OTRs than on real rangehoods). When I bought mine, it was the only one, and LG seemed to be discontinuing it, but I suppose they just tweaked the model a bit. My only concern is that when it breaks, there might be no replacement available for it.

On the other hand, I'm somewhat disappointed with my 18" "fully integrated" Miele dishwasher -- its lower rack is optimized for use in a second dishwasher, rather than in a space-saving main dishwasher. I liked the idea of the top silverware rack, so that bottom-rack space is freed up. But no -- the bottom rack is half-useless because the back is just a big flat-bed.

They're both sort of NYC eccentricities--not a huge market for them. Maybe they're used in boats and RVs too.

yes, LG discontinuing the 22" OTRM is why I'm leaning to designing my cabinets to accommodate a 30" one instead. As you say, however, the compact one are used for RV's and boats, so I assume there will always be a market for them.

I am getting the LG one. I found 2 22" ones: the LG and the Sharp. The LG is much prettier. Considering I cook once every 6 years, I would rather have a 24" range and a 30" fridge (which I use everyday).

I installed a 30" over-the-range microwave over a 24" range in my place. I bought Viking. I know of the LG 24" and was told by several salespeople that it was not of any quality and would melt if over a good range. I had to have the cabinets above the microwave re-sized, but it turned out great. Also, I bought the Bosch 18" dishwasher and it has been great. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your response, johnyhoops, a 30" MV over a 24" range is another route I can take. Do you have the 30" mv affixed to two 15" cabinets, or a single 30" cabinet? I guess the MV is centered over the smaller 24" range. I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know how you have it set up. I could use some more cabinet space on the bottom, so a 24" range is a better way for me to go.

Aside from the possible poor quality of the LG 24" MV, as far as I know LG and I hear Sharp are the only manufacturers, so choices are limited.

I think what johnyhoops said isn't that the salespeople were saying that the quality of the LG is poor, but that it's not designed to exhaust the heat of commercial-grade ranges like Vikings. It's designed to handle a normal consumer range at the specified distance from the cooking surface. But more likely they were, um, upselling.

OTR micros don't hang from the cabinets above -- they hang from a bracket that's attached to the wall. Then the plug (and sometimes the exhaust duct) is run through a hole at the bottom of those cabinets. If you're doing the recirculating vent, and want to use two 15" ones, that's fine. But of course 30" being the standard for OTR micros, you'll definitely find the right size cabinet for a 30".

thanks, Alanhart, it makes sence that the OTR MV would be suspended from wall brackets rather than the cabinet itself.

Landrum8, I have one, two-doored cabinet above the microwave. The microwave is centered over the range. Alanhart is correct in the comment above that the heat from a Viking or one of the other more powerful ranges is the reason for not going with an LG. It is also 100% correct that the microwave is attached to the wall with the plug going into an outlet in the cabinet. (in my case at least). As far as the salesperson upselling, the salesperson wasn't initially the one that brought it to my attention. A close friend who is a skilled chef took a look and said there is no way the LG could stand up to the heat if you were doing any serious cooking on a regular basis in the kitchen. I say why take that chance, but ultimately, the decision is yours. The salesperson later concurred.

Wow, this thread is 6 years old, but here's hoping someone has new information.

Am gutting and renovating a new kitchen. Have been searching and searching and so far can't find any 24" over the range microwaves to go over a 24" Bertazzoni. Everything seems to be 29 - 30." Looks like a lot of the 24" ones have been discontinued.

There are BUILT IN-s that are 24", but aren't those inappropriate for over the range because the cabinet wouldn't be insulated and wiring would be a fire hazard?

I've searched AJ Madison,Amazon, Consumer Reports and Googled and Googled, but no luck. A few people suggested and OTR for a RV vehicle. But the only ones I see are 29".

Any leads would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Put in a little hood, then a small microwave on top of the hood. I could not find a 24" over the range MW either.

GE Profile makes one. I installed it over the range and under a cabinet 2 years ago and it's great.

That does not sound like an attractive look. Maybe I lack vision.

Other than very quickly cooked meals at reasonably low temperatures I'd say resign yourself to take-out, etc.

It's 2016. I live in a Manhattan studio. 24x24x24 kitchen. Oh how I wish someone would come back with a 24" OTR microwave with the built in "range hood" ...

Our apartment on the UWS which we bought a few years ago came with a 24 inch Viking stove and a dinky hood. I would love to replace the hood with something up to the Viking's power, preferably with a microwave but not a deal breaker, and haven't been able to find anything.

UES8, Could you post a link to the product you bought and are happy with? I'm not seeing it.

I have been also looking into 24" hoods for a small condo. Here's what I have found.

Costco have a really nice / well priced /modern / stainless steel 24" hood by Ancona Casetta Series.

However, my kitchen is so small I really need to get the microwave off the counter.
Then I found this one which appears to be made for Canada only.
Whirlpool Microwave Hood Combination, 24-Inch (60 cm)

Lowes Canada sells it - it looks super cute - but is $$$ @ $1,298 CAD. Also, I am not even sure if Lowes would let you get it in the USA. You might struggle with warranties etc.

I'm starting to think that putting a 30" microwave hood over a 24" range is the only solution :(
