Discussion about
Has anyone found a garden center/nursery with really good plant/tree selection that delivers/installs in New York? More specifically Manhattan. Trying to break the stranglehold that Chelsea Gardens has on Manhattan (now that Dimitri's is gone). Doesn't seem as if the suburban places will deliver/work in Manhattan. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plant Shed on w 96 will find whatever and install it, too.
What happened to Dimitri?

Hicks Nurseries in Westbury. They deliver to Manhattan. I've never tried them, but they're on my list -- the place looks enormous.

Liberty Sunset is closing its doors in Red Hook - amazing plant sale going on now. It's a sad story, but there are great deals to be had. Everything half off, including some monster trees. Their phones and website are shut down, so you'd have to make the trek out here. Lots of landscapers use this place, so transport to Manhattan shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks everyone.
Tina, I know about Liberty (guess Chelsea Gardens must have been too much competition). Need some bushes and will check it out.

flarf - will try to check it out, but I must admit I hate traffic to LI

Stakan - re: Dimitri's - it's unbelievable that they screwed up, because they actually OWNED that property on 2nd avenue. I think they must have over-leveraged and lost it. Then they moved to a weird location across the river. Went there once (had to be by car), never went back.
Heartbroken as they were also my supply for firewood.

The Bronx location was indeed weird, but I thought it was the original, and E. Harlem (?) an annex.

Very surprised these garden centers are going bust ... with the renewed (national) interest in vegetable gardening, you'd think there'd be increased interest in DIY landscaping as well, no? Maybe people have just settled in for Lowes/HD (especially for annuals) and/or catalogues. For the latter, I recommend http://millernurseries.com/ for many perennials.

ah - I think in New York it's the space requirement, (with a reasonable rent) that does them in. Especially if you're talking about a really good, large selection of trees, shrubs, and more than the Home Depot selection of plants. And also, it's hard to a lot of garden centers to compete with Home Depot pricing, when people are looking for the standard plants (I know I just bought a load of pansies at Home Depot).

Though I was surprised about Liberty Sunset I must admit that though I went to Chelsea Gardens in Red Hook many times, I never went to Liberty, though I can't exactly say why.

Thanks for the link to miller - looks very interesting.

I get my plants from the Green Market people (Stokes) - you can order from them.

The other problem is that in New York if the space is large enough for a garden center, it can also be suitable for a condo or hotel. The Tribeca Grand used to be the site of a garden center.

nyc - do they have large quantities of flats, etc? And which Green Market?

It's a 40 minute train ride from Penn Station to Westbury. If you're in the market for trees, you probably need to have them delivered anyway.

I might pop out there this weekend, will report back if I do. I have two pots that need trees and don't get much sun on my terrace, so it's always a challenge finding things that don't mind the shade. If only there was such a thing as an impatien tree...

If Hicks delivers, I strongly second that nursery as a choice worth the trip. It is expansive, has tremendous variety and a good stock of all it carries. I've used them for years for plant materials for my weekend place. Tons and tons and tons of flats of every description for annuals.

The same vendors show up at Union Square and by the AMNH.

What's large quantities? You can easily get a 24(or was it 20?) flats of pansies for $20. Need to show up early before they sell out or pre-order week before.

N10023 - large quantities are like 10 flats (like the 12 pack flatA) of bacopa and 20 flats of various flowers

ph41, delivery is one thing but what are you going to do for installation? Can you plant a tree by yourself?

I don't think that is a problem, ph. Just order in advance.

Gowanus Nursery on Columbia and Carroll (sorry, Red Hook again) is good, though it has a small selection in stock. They will probably order what you want...

And this place is new and in Manhattan - they started following me on twitter yesterday - I know nothing about them yet, but they are on 116th Street.

Sprout Home in Williamsburg on Grand is small, but they have a decent selection in their back garden. Union Square is probably your best bet for volume.

I'm moving to a new place without outdoor space. If anyone is looking for a Japanese Maple, I have two of them for sale. Each are approximately 5.5 ft tall in pots.

nyc10023 - I think I just prefer a plant place that's around during the week as well as on the weekend. I like to be able to check things out during the week when places aren't so busy.

Stakan - For large trees (7+ Ft.)the garden center (Chelsea and Dimitri's) planted for me. But I can do and have done the smaller stuff, like good sized but not huge azaleas,Japanese fir, etc. Good exercise.

Plant Shed looked interesting and I will check it out.

I left a comment (first time) yesterday which has not appeared - was it the links?

A new garden center has opened on 116th Street, Manhattan, called Urban Garden Center. I have not been yet myself. And Gowanus Nursery in Red Hook, has very interesting plants, though the space is small.

Billy -- I'd be interested in the trees. Drop me a line if they're still available; stacy@covehurst.net

Yes, Urban Garden Center is open and they are the same family that ran Dimitri's. They have 20,000 sq. ft. & Free Parking. They will be fully operational by the end of the month, but are open. Check them out at www.UrbanGardenNYC.com or call 646-872-3991.

Hi,

I have a list of local nurseries on my site www.cityplanters.com. Also a lot of info for beginner container gardeners.
