It was built as tax-subsidized affordable housing, and later went private. Search the NYT archive for 20-year-old stories about its troubles back then.
Last time I walked by, the co-op was still allowing jerry-built enclosures of the balconies, which gives it a tatty look.
We looked there about a year ago. We were told that the Board wasn't going to allow any balcony not already enclosed to be enclosed. The Board will ask for 4 months to close.
People living there seem very happy with the building.

Any comments on the safety of the area considering Lincoln Guild is just blocks away from the Amsterdam Houses projects?
So is all of the West 60s just blocks away. Not a problem.
I looked at the apartments a few years ago and the bldg. and hallways were real ugly.
I lived form 1962 till 1985> my nom still lives there. It is a wonderful west side building. Retired teachers musicians and actors. There is a good mix of old west siders and new young families. I wish I could afford to live there now. It is an increadably safe building.
I just read athread about the distance to the subway. The entrance is on 66th and broadway That is two blocks. In my book that is close!!!!!
As a long time tenant I can honestly say that the neighborhood is extremely safe, the building is mid-century but the lobby and hallways are slated to be renovated, the maintenance is extremely low, the building has no underlying mortgage, the corporation owns the land under the building, and the reserve fund is crazy high. This is a great place to live and you would be lucky to be able to afford to land one of these apts.
Saw a lovely one bedroom apartment here recently and as we were standing there, the sound of someone playing the piano (it sounded like it was coming from directly above) could be heard CLEARLY. To anyone living in this building: are the walls/ceiling/floor thin enough that noise is an issue? We really liked this unit and I guess we should be grateful that we heard the pianist before any purchase. Anyone else have noise issues in this building? Thanks in advance...
