Discussion about
Hubby reports no luck at Whole Foods Columbus Circle -- today he is being dispatched to Union Square Greenmarket, and possibly Eataly. But we could use some help -- anybody seen 'em anywhere? ali

We had one fiddlehead each at Daniel's last night. At that rate I'm sure they'll have some extras to spare :)

I gave myself a bit of food poisoning once by only lightly sauteeing fresh fiddlehead ferns. Apparently they're covered in beaver shit or whatever and really need to be cooked thoroughly.

Anyway, restaurants often use frozen fiddleheads. I'm not sure if they're available to consumers in frozen form.

Fairway always carries them. Probably a week away.

Thanks RS!

Report from Columbus Greenmarket is that they're two weeks away. They've got ramps though.

for future reference, Lucy's greenmarket report is generally a good reference for Union Square availability of seasonal items. http://www.echonyc.com/~lwollin/greenmarket.html

They've got them at the Whole Foods on the UWS. Delicious.

However, the poor checkout girl had no idea what they were and couldn't find them in the book. "Are they a type of pepper?" No. "Bean?" Not really. More of a...fern.

(Turns out, they're in their own category.)

You should have said they're russet potatoes.

Oh, dear god, at first I thought this was a post about some new pest (a la bedbugs, stinkbugs and silverfish...). Relieved to see I was wrong :-)

NYC (and others who might still care) they are still at Eataly.

Which is the place to go, because we've struck out at Whole Foods a number of times. Supposedly they were at Whole Foods UWS for a couple of days, but they were gone by the time we got there.

If you have a car, I recommend the burbs. You can get as many ramps and fiddleheads as you want, and all you pay for is gas!
