Be sure to send a thank you card to Bloomberg! Violent Memorial Day Weekend, NYPD Cuts, Cause Fears Of Bloody Summer In NYC Claudia Milan was shot in the face on Sunday while holding the hand of her two year-old son in the Bronx. She joined an unfortunate tally of those killed during a remarkably bloody Memorial Day weekend in New York. From Friday morning to Monday night, eight people across the city were gunned down according to The New York Times, prompting some to wonder if the unofficial beginning of summer was also the beginning of a deadly crime wave. New York City was off to a good start this year--with a 25% decrease in murders by February 23 as compared to the same date in 2010. Since then, however, the city's gotten back on track with last year's murder rate. The New York Daily News reports that the eight people killed in seven shootings over the weekend helped bring the city's murder tally to 185 on Monday. Through May 29 of last year, police reported 186 murders. While nationally there's been a %4.4 decrease in murders during the last 5 years of the recession, New York has seen a %14 increase in murders. Many have been quick to blame recent cuts to the city's police force, which has seen more than 5,000 officers laid off since 2002, according to CBS News. City Councilman Peter Vallone told the Daily News, "We're not going to have new police officers the rest of the year. Right now, it's clear to the population we do not have the beat cops and bike cops we used to have. And if it's clear to the population, it's clear to the bad guys, as well." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/31/crime-increase-new-york_n_869400.html [less]
Wasnt there some idiot who 2 years ago warned that falling home prices and a declining economy would cause crime to skyrocket? Oh yeah, that was me. Welcome to the new NYC. I think now might be a good time to consider buying a bullet proof vest.
All of these shootings occurred in black and Hispanic neighborhoods or in the vicinity of housing projects.
This is why people are willing to pay astronomical prices to live in a "good" neighborhood even though they are practically giving away real estate in the "bad" neighborhoods.
Crime has a habit of spilling over into better neighborhoods over time.
Weren't you alpine two years ago bf your sex change operation? Has your 5 year lease on your pt cruiser expired yet?
Po-ta-to, Po-tah-to.
More air biscuits from the prez. Stfu and get a job where you can afford not to be gang raped every Tuesday.
Ahahaha!
"asnt there some idiot who 2 years ago warned that falling home prices and a declining economy would cause crime to skyrocket? Oh yeah, that was me"
No, that definitely wasn't you... because 2 years ago you were screaming that housing prices weren't declining.
Remember... "SHOW ME JUST ONE EXAMPLE"
Putz.
Panhandlers are back and growing.
I guess Guiliani didnt kill them all as rumoured but maybe had them in Gitmo, or worse, LIC.
8 people out of how many million who live in our city? It's terrible that this woman was shot but can we really call it a crime wave just yet? Why don't we assess in September?
I live on 157th St. and will thank Bloomberg a thank you card. There were foot patrol officers all over the neighborhood. They've been around since about April. Noise is at a minimum. As I keep saying, the biggest noise maker in my 'hood is currently Mr Softee. And I give the new police approach all the credit.
Like all the end-of-the-world idiots on here, the crime-will-return morons 3 years ago have yet to say they were wrong. Post--Lehman, many regular posters on here claimed crime would sky-rocket. It didn't. After record decreases consistently surpassing the rest of the nation's downward crime trend for the past 15 years, crime blipped up in two categories last year: sexual assaults and homicide. The sexual assault increase is likely reflective of altered and improved NYPD response to and handling of these cases. The more sensitively and effectively these cases are handled, the more victims will feel comfortable coming forward to report them. There is nothing to tie the increase in this area to the economy, but rather it is probably the result of a blue ribbon police commision's recommendations being implemented, and that's a good thing. Homicides definitely spiked. Whether it is a blip or trend or small regression of the massive advances made since 1989 remains to be seen.
Significantly, the other FBI-monitored crimes ("Index crimes") that one would expect to more nearly be tied to the economy (robbery, burglary, larceny) have not increased and have in some cases continued to decrease.
Bottom line is that it does not appear the economy has been tied to any increase in crime.
"There were foot patrol officers all over the neighborhood."
... yeah, collecting their take from all the shopkeepers, while Boston Bloomberg looks the other way.
alan, you think this practice is still the norm? post-serpico? i realize almost everything is cyclical but to that extent? not looking to bait, just curious on your take....
Yes, unabashedly. I even saw the cash pass over the counter to a uniformed officer (with another standing by) 2-3 years ago, at a food business that has since gone under. And no, it couldn't have been change for a purchase. PAL donation? No.
And why do you think there are corner boys hanging out with impunity at 5AM when it's 5 degrees out? Because it's too hot in their crowded little apartments? Because they're very social people? Lovers of the great outdoors?
alanhart - they don't hang out on street corners at 5am when it's 5 degrees out. You clearly don't live in the area. They sit in cars that are idling. More often than not, in minivans. When it's hot out just about everyone heads to the river. The older folks sit in their fold up chairs and domino boards. It's very 1950s.
Maybe cops do take from shop keepers. Doesn't matter to me. Has improved my quality of life significantly. I think you're being a bit of an aggressive downer.
the good thing about murder is that the crime cant be downgraded by compustat-gaming cops
corpse=murder=violent crime
yet our cops are busy writing tickets, busting kids for pot, and harassing cyclists
nah. If someoe is shot 5 times in the back, it will just get classified as a suicide.
"blame ***recent*** cuts to the city's police force"
"which has seen more than 5,000 officers laid off since ***2002***"
????
He should have said eliminated due to attrition, not layoffs. No cop has bene laid off. The NYPD has about 6,000 fewer cops today than it did in 2001.
34,000 today vs. 40,000 in 2001.
not that i hesitate to take you at your word, but some verification please?
and even so, "within the last decade" = recent?
both of these are from the same article about recent budget cuts.
"In Newark, New Jersey, where they recently laid off 167 police officers, the murder rate has jumped %71"
"Many have been quick to blame recent cuts to the city's police force, which has seen more than 5,000 officers laid off since 2002, according to CBS News."
so, the newark stat supports the article's point as is, but the new yor stat isn't quite dramatic enough, so let's include a really big number. people are stupid, big numbers scare them.
i would think that's beyond transparent for a bunch of braniacs like you fellas........RIGHT?
"Since the NYPD has roughly 6,000 fewer cops now than it did shortly after 9-11, a big question surrounds the new command:"
http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-01-18/local/27087995_1_new-command-city-cops-ground-zero
fine, but that's still 10 years. didn't the bad budget cuts just happen? that kind of lazy duplicity i think can only come from a source who knows his audience all too well

Steady Decline in Major Crime Baffles Experts
By RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr.
Published: May 23, 2011
The number of violent crimes in the United States dropped significantly last year, to what appeared to be the lowest rate in nearly 40 years, a development that was considered puzzling partly because it ran counter to the prevailing expectation that crime would increase during a recession.

In all regions, the country appears to be safer. The odds of being murdered or robbed are now less than half of what they were in the early 1990s, when violent crime peaked in the United States. ...
The news was not as positive in New York City, however. After leading a long decline in crime rates, the city saw increases in all four types of violent lawbreaking — murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — including a nearly 14 percent rise in murders. But data from the past few months suggest the city’s upward trend may have slowed or stopped.
