Discussion about
Hi, I just bought a coop, a pretty lenient one, and need to redo my kitchen. The oven is adjacent to the window (not in front of it) and I thought it would be perfect to install a vent hood to vent sideways and out the window with ducting. I'm a little okay to double check with coop because after mentioning it to them (along with other plans they may not have fully analyzed) they said it was all fine. Does anyone know if this is legal? Thanks.

This would definitely be a big "NO" if, as in many buildings, the kitchen window is an egress to a fire escape.

Not everyone lives in a crummy building with fire escapes Matt.

Vent would take up very small piece at top of window. Certainly would not impede exit if necessary.

Supposedly range hoods aren't supposed to vent within x feet of another window, to avoid flinging grease and smoke into other peoples' apartments. I can't find it in the building code, though, and you see a lot of exhaust vents in windows, so may as well chance it.

Worst case is, somebody'll call it in to 311 and you have to undo it.

My kitchen window is no egress for a fire escape. The building doesn't have fire escapes.

I would chance it but it will cost a lot of money to buy and install only to remove. Good feedback though. Thanks!
