Discussion about 5 Riverside Drive #16E
It's in this week's The Hunt: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/10/realestate/hiding-in-plain-sight.html
OK, so she got it for $417,000 and for that building and location she did well. Still it looks like a studio with a wall, but for one person I am sure it works. Two other things. First, she told the agent she wanted that area specifically within one block with charm. So the agent takes her downtown??? Then to pour salt on a wound the agent took to Schwab House. I noticed in the add it stated "no Pied a Terres". When I see that I wonder what transgressed in that building in the past? There are buildings that are adament and I wonder what happened, although I am sure we could just about imagine.
It would drive me nuts to be on RSD in an east facing apartment...
Right, it was built as a studio. It sold for $12,600, with $116 maintenance, in 1968 when the building went co-op.
Funny she didn't want to live in Schwab House, but doesn't mind looking across the street at it.
NWT, she is facing the back facing east, no Schwab view or river for that matter. I am sure in 1968 whoever bought it had to deal with friends stating, "Who would pay that for an apartment"? I should know, when my inside price was $25,000 for a one bedroom with terrace, I got alot of negative feedback, Of course Time does two things, it marches on and tells.
Bramstar, I agree, if I had to face the bitter wind in the winter eating my face on my way home, I would have to justify it with at least a river view.
The corner window in the bedroom faces east and north to Schwab House. The other BR window faces north to Schwab House. The remaining windows face east over townhouses to 277 WEA.
$1200 maintenance for a studio is high.
Would you rather live in a beautiful building, or face one?
NWT, you are right and to that view I say EWWWWWW!
Did anyone ever see a photo of the estate that was on the site where Schwab House is? I will try to find it. What a place. It was razed post war and I am sure when the new sturcture went up it did little for morale in that hood.

Found it. The estate was built by a magnate named Schwab. Duh. I learn something new every day.
Great building at a great location.
All this place needs is the smell of a litter box.
A couple more pictures of the old Schwab mansion:

"It was eventually torn down and replaced by a drab apartment block". Love it!!!
Thanks NWT, First I posted the wrong thing and then my internet went out. What I had attempted to post pales in comparison to your rendering. I will save this. Thanks again.
