Discussion about
I'm looking to rennovate a small Manhattan galley kitchen and have heard about Ikea cabinets. Has anyone out there used them? if so, is it really more cost-effective than getting customized? once you factor in the installation, quality, flexibility to conform to your space, etc....thx

We have designed a few IKEA kitchens and have been pleasantly surprised by their quality. Price-wise, they are probably a 1/4 of the cheapest custom shop you will find near the city, if not less. It is not impossible to integrate some custom elements, just make sure you have a good installer and it shouldn't be a problem.

Well said BuiltIn

It should also be pointed out that it if the installer knows what he is doing you can do 80-90% ikea and 10-20% custom

I have an example on my website under my blog

I will also be posting final photos of that kitchen over the weekend if I cancel my vacation

I did a wet bar for our home (in suburbs) and after looking carefully at IKEA, I decided against them trying to get a more "custom" look. I didn't want people walking in and noticing first thing that it's IKEA. Guess what? I paid 3x as much (labor is cheaper out here), and I feel like Ikea would have been fine (granted we don't use this everyday). What I mean is, my end result looks to me very similar to the IKEA stuff I've seen. Check out Ikeafans and thathomesite.com for pictures of IKEA kitchens, you will never believe it! FYI Home Depot has some mid-priced cabinets too, more than IKEA but definitely reasonable, although from what I saw quality seemed the same as Ikea, IMO. I also looked at Viola Park, division of HenryBuilt. That was pretty pricey but the stuff was really beautiful, excellent quality.

As for my finished result, I wish I had saved the money and used IKEA or splurged with the Viola Park. My end result looks fine and is perfectly functional but I am left a little bitter knowing how much less I could have spent for what seems like a very similar product.

This was Ikea mixed in with a little custom.

I noticed that IKEA has become more high end lately. Several years ago, most of the display kitchens in their sotre had either formica or butcher block. The last time I went, I saw mainly granite and quartz counters.
