Discussion about The Piermont at 201 West 21st Street in Chelsea
Any thoughts on this building? Excellent location but the facade reminds me of an office building / hospital / prison. How are the financials? Any hidden surprises?

Do you want me to make you cry? I bought my very first apartment here in 1996 for $65,000.
Solidly built, pretty easy to renovate, although I remember having problems with the parquet floor.

No tears intended - but back to the oiginal question - any news more recent than 1996?
We looked in the building. The floor plans are quite generous and smartly done. If your focus is on space for the money, the "boxy" 1960s layout gives you a lot more usable space than most pre-war floor plans in the area. The roof deck is spectacular if that's important to you. Even on the lower floors, the views are not bad. Granted, they're city views, but the surrounding buildings are mostly lower and/or set back.
Maintenance seems a little on the high side for the quality of the building when compared to others in the area. We had a hard time getting back the "institutional" quality of the building's exterior and the low ceilings are a little bit of a drag.
Sorry sjt, I wouldn't want to comment on most recent financials without having a set in front of me.

In terms of "bang for the buck" in Chelsea, this building is a really good deal. You won't find another doorman building in central Chelsea with relatively spacious floor space at this price. Wall-to-wall windows get great light, and the south-facing side is all-day sunlight. Decent views on any side, but the higher floors have some really great city views. The maintenance is slightly higher than some other buildings as lad points out, but not substantially out of line with other doorman buildings in the area. Well maintained with a beautiful roofdeck.
I lived here for several years before moving out of town, and would move back if the opportunity arose - particularly now that its surrounded by Whole Foods, Trader Joes and Garden of Eden. You really can't get more central than this building. I think its hard to do better for this price in the neighborhood.
