Once a true menace for small transactions, posing risks of emptying out a change drawer, or returning near all of it to a customer in exchange for a counterfeit one. But we haven't had a larger bill produced for daily transactions my entire life. Yet things cost at least 5 times from when I was born. Today's hundred is 1970's twenty dollar bill. And now it has all these neat little strips and holograms and verifying a real bill takes all of 5 seconds. In fact more time is spent explaining to a customer "we are not supposed to take bills this large." Really? Is this not legal tender for all debts public and private? Do you think if I had a smaller bill I wouldn't give it you? Ok so your a Starbucks and you sell a five dollar product. But it is a luxurious product. Two dollars everywhere else. And you took it anyway in the end. What's with all the drama? Is it because it's a Chelsea Starbucks? SO the question is. Is it legal to refuse a $100 bill for a payment? Or does this just fall under the vague "right to refuse service to anyone." [less]
but what you're not considering is that many businesses resisted dealing with a $20 bill. as an example, cab drivers were none too pleased to take one. but, since cash machines regularly spit out twenties and some fifties, why can't you be bothered to carry a twenty or two for starbucks and the like?
CC
I most certainly can and most often do.
That one morning a year you never found yourself dig in your pocket and find only large?
it's also illegal to refuse a dollar bill that is torn if more than half is there. but a woman at a bakery in dc refused it and i got into it with her, saying she is legally required to accept it, she kept refusing, she dared me to call the cops on her! i entertained the idea for a good 1.5 minutes and ruled it out. i ended paying with credit card, because i literally did not have the cash without that dollar, and then is said LOOK HERE, LOOK WHAT I'M DOING and put in the tip jar. HA!
i don't understand why you need to get hundreds in the first place. the fifties out of the cash machine cause enough pain.
columbiacounty: "i don't understand why you need to get hundreds in the first place."
Drug dealers don't like carrying around multiple suitcases if they could avoid it.
so...
you're saying this poster is a drug dealer?
Only columbiacounty would have so much to say about which form of currency people use.
oh, and lucille, you know I don't criticize you much, but that story borders on bragging about calling a landlord to fix your $10 toilet seat and letting it be out of commission for days, instead of dealing with it yourself immediately.
that is in no way analogous to the situation you describe. and if you're holding back any kind of criticism for some reason, by all means stop doing that.
>and if you're holding back any kind of criticism for some reason
I don't think you need me to tell you that in the past week or two you've gotten progressively more nutty.
do you have examples of said nuttyness?
One example: In this thread, about 10 hours ago.
ok, i told this story on this board 10 hours ago. this happened at least 5 years ago.
Yes, 10 hours ago, would fit within the 2 week time frame I mentioned.
so, telling the story is nutty? not the actual action? although i would absolutely argue with any cashier today and any day to take my goddamn torn dollar bill. they have to, it's the law.
Both are nutty. The original action. Then telling other people about it.
but it's a thread about cashiers not accepting certain bills
Good night.
oh so you don't actually have a point. enjoy the rest of your evening.
I expressed my point already. It won't change because you redirect my attention back to your original statements from which I drew my conclusion.
sure, you made an ambiguous reference to my recent nuttynes, citing this story as proof. when i explained this actually happened years ago, you said the nutty part was telling the story. when i pointed out this is a thread about cashiers not accepting certain bill, you said good night. so no, you actually have not expressed anything resembling a legitimate relevant point.
So you say, but the transcript is above for you, me, or anyone to read and draw their own conclusion about someone who got into a fight with a cashier at a bakery and considered calling the police ... then still 5 years later was unembarassed enough about it to bring it up for others to read. The original act is nutty, but 5 years later ... still talking about it?
By the way, you did ask for examples. I gave you one. Now you are upset I gave you that one. Good thing I didn't give you more than one.
weak
