Can anybody with firsthand knowledge tell me about the neighborhoods surrounding these properties? We have found apts we like in all 3, but are unsure of the neighborhoods. The schools for any of them don't look so great as of yet but walking around the Lenox area seemed pleasantly busy and diverse. We're looking for somewhere to settle with our 3 young children for a while - up and coming but safe to be out and about with the kids. Proximity to parks and transportation fairly important, though building amenities can help with the park issue. Does anyone live in or close to any of these buildings that can tell us the good or bad about the building/area? We currently live in a fantastic neighborhood (100s and West End) but we are being priced out if we want a large space that doesn't have issues (old, bugs, etc.). I appreciate any information anyone can contribute! [less]
In my experience, you should research schools first, find one that suits you and then start looking for apartments in the zone. Insideschools has a lot of good info about individual NYC schools.
the crillon court area is great. i live in a similar condo down the block. neighborhood is safe and slowly adding amenities. very diverse. riverside park right here is pretty nice and there is a cool rec center on 145th and rsd. 1 train a block away and th A/C is walkable. easy parking (believe the crillon has a garage). the riverside area is more of an uws feel. preferred over central harlem for me
If schools suck, hard to get your kids into a different district if you don't live there. Get your kids in a good school first, then move to get more space for less $. DOE currently allows you to stay in your school even if you move out of the district. Many parents at our D3 school now live in D5.
REMom is right, but be careful about younger siblings, rules have recently changed and out of zone sibs are no longer at the top of the list for entering K.
