Discussion about
I'm going to see places with an agent from X company. There's an apt I've seen listed by another agent from same company that I would like to see. Should I ask the person I am seeing things with to show me the other agent's listing? Contact the other agent directly? Skip both agents an see whether the building's doorman can give me intel? Thank you!
F the agents. ask the doorman
Are you sure X company is reputable? Maybe their name should be a hint.
Tricky question. Pinky up and hope for the best.
Craz...sup?
You should ask the agent you are working with. They should be able to show you any listings by other agents in their company or at any other company in general.
Agree with npaik. Go through your agent. No reason not to. Going around your agent won't gain you anything, and will create ill will if it gets back to him/her. I'm sure your agent will be glad to show the other unit to you.
Is this on a rental? If the one agent shows another agent's listing he/she is going to be your buyer's broker on that listing / create a double fee situation... Happened to me and the broker said she had no room on fee since she needed to split with the listing agent (even though both were same firm). Beware!
FreebirdNYC - If I were put in the situation I would tell both brokers to go pound sand and find another apartment. Just curious - what did you end up doing?
Since you have the address I am assuming it's an exclusive, in which case the doorman plays no part in the equation.
You got it right, downtown1234! (Although to be fair it was more a matter of still looking to buy a place more so than just sticking it to the brokers!) Broker "etiquette" is often an oxymoron...
Well, I'm not necessarily *working*-working with the agent, in fact I'm going to be sort of test-driving them to see whether I like 'em and how much what they show will match my criteria.
I think the idea of going right to the doorman is what I'll go with.
Thank you!

Falco, lovin' the "pinky up".
cross your legs
and never appear cross
Helenwaite, so you intend to you use the brokers ad, information he gave you, use the pictures I'm sure he emailed you, and then you want to circumvent him and try to go straight to the doorman? And Brokers are the scum here?
If you wanted to go straight to the doorman, why waste the brokers time by calling him and have him set up appointments?
angeloz - no that's not what I was saying.
Agent A will be showing me some places. This will be the first meeting with Agent A, thus I don't know whether we'd click, whether the things I'll be shown are what I have asked to see, etc.
Completely separately, I have seen a listing from Agent B and I am interested in seeing it, but I have not contacted them.
Agent A has nothing to do with it.
However, both agents wotk for the same firm.
So what I'd asked was whether I should ask Agent A to show it to me (even though I found it myself), should I contact Agent B directly.
Or should I just go by the building on my own since the address is public.
And angeloz,I didn't say the agents were scum. Furthermore, if I were "scum" as you imply, why would I ask for etiquette advice?
h
Helen Sorry, I wasnt trying to imply you were scum, just aiming that comment to the board as some on it view brokers as less than scum. I agree with npaik

The obstinance here is astounding.
IF THE ADDRESS IS LISTED ON THE ADVERTISEMENT IT IS LIKELY THE EXCLUSIVE OF THE AGENT WHO CREATED THE AD!
What good will the doorman do? Most likely he will just refer you to the listing agent, from whom he'll get a little cheddar for sending along the business.
Remember too that most landlords work with agents because they don't want to deal directly with YOU. They'd rather have the agent run credit checks, deal with contracts and all the other crap - no skin off their noses since YOU are paying the agent's fee. So again, exactly what good do you think the doorman will do?
Also: if you saw the listing in an ad, you did NOT find the listing "on your own". You found it by looking at an agent's ad. Just pay the damn commission and stop being such a whiner.
Squid, am I whining? I have not said a thing about fees in this topic.
I asked about the etiquette of seeing a listing of interest when it was listed by an agent from the same company as another agent that's showing me things, but I take your point about "finding it on my own". Ditto about the doorman point.
angeloz, thanks!
Hi Jim! You make me blush. I'm not even one of the heavy-duty posters and yet you take the time and effort to respond when I do. And you are such an empath -you know me so well,
why, it's like you can see right into my soul.
Thanks everybody,

Hones just called you a vagina (of the worst kind) constructed completely out of fecal matter.
He hopes you die under great duress.
From his prespective, what kind of life or happiness could there be for such a freakish genetic calamity?
But Hones...a painful death?
I'm no saying, "don't have anger issues"
Just don't be angry with the vagina.
It's your first residence

Let's get back to real estate
And keep it clean!
falco, take it from one "crazy" to another - up your dose AND, count to 10 before you post.
Helen - sorry - you were indeed not whining. Someone else was suggesting the doorman workaround. Apologies.
Find an agent you are comfortable with and work with that agent. There are good agents out there that are ethical, smart and good negotiators. I hope you find one.
Hi Rahel, Thanks for your comment.
As n update, I saw a few places with Braoker A. I never asked that person about the listing from Broker B (they both work for the same company) nor did I ever go see that listing.
Broker A was pretty jerky; very little to show me, very pushy about one of the three that was shown. There was one other place that BA told me about but was very weird about it - meanwhile still hardselling me on the one place. Finally, I had an emergency and couldn't make an appt but I gave 2 hrs notice via txt which had been BA's preferred method of contact. Didn't hear back so I called about 45 min ahead of appt and I got blasted with hostility and curses. So much for etiquette.
See good thing you didn't lock up the second listing with Broker A. Assuming this is your real name, I hope broker A is not a SE reader :-)
Freebird: if BA is a SE reader, perhaps that would be a good thing. Like how Dear Abby would suggest clipping out the coloumn and leaving it on the problematic person's desk!
Helenwaite,
As with any profession, there are people good at their job and those who are not and those that should not be in business period.
If you were shouted at with hostility and curses, I would notify his or her manager and complain, and then speak with another real estate company.
On another note, the level of abuse I am reading from people reponding to your post is downright cruel.
I wonder why there is SO many hostile people on Streeteasy.
I think these people need to find another outlet for their hate!
It is indeed VERY sad.
