Discussion about
Saks this a.m. The 70% racks were disappointing though I found some underwear. Designer stuff on "presale" - goes on sale next Wed.

All reports have been thqt the higher end stores have been doing well selling at full price. The prediction had been that their Black Friday "sales" were going to be more for form than substance.

I tend to think these early reports are non-sense and p.r. put out by the retailers themselves. I can't see how there could be any honest reporting of sales volume barely several hours into the first day of business.

River - the reports have been from the last months, not just this one day.

That Plasma TV I PAID 5K for back in 03 is now under $600, but it still works and delivers a great picture.

And do doubt the property you bought back in '03 that is now worth a fraction of what you paid is still as functional and nice as when you bought it ...

Real estate has performed far better as an investment than electronics. Not even close

im still not quite brave enough to attend actual black friday sales, but in the spirit of discount shopping i went to tjmaxx and only looked at the clearance racks and got a really cool rudsak leather jacket for $60 (retail over $400) and a pair of skinny black joe's jeans jeans for $20 (retail around $180). nothing wrong with that, no sir. happy leftover eating!

my regular winter coat which looks a lot like this but i'ts a dark olive green really needs to be retired at this point. wore it for 5 years! maybe i should give it a viking burial and set it on fire on a wood dinghy and release into the hudson, it has earned at least those honors. could i get arrested for that?

nyc10023, good for you that you were shopping the sales. Saks is pretty good with their sales racks as compared to many other department stores where the sales clothes are all jumbled together on the racks. The clothes in the boutique shops are usually more interesting, but you can never return them or their exchange policy is for store credit only.

I've never done well with sales racks at the better stores.

They're right -- they do well at full-price. The only stuff you'll find in the sales racks are overly-small or overly-huge sizes, or styles that nobody else wanted to buy in the first place.

This is what I call year round, Century21 syndrome

I don't know - just about all of the shoes at Saks are 40% off right now. And the sales racks were pretty good too. Bergdorf and Barneys had nothing on sale yet.

well the jury seems to be in and sales have not been good.
-------------------------------------------------------
While scattered markdowns are standard every year, discounts across entire stores — which analysts say are more widespread than last year — suggest merchants are stuck with too much merchandise.

Many retailers entered the season “with pretty optimistic plans” that shoppers would rush into stores and pay full price, Mr. Bassuk said. But that did not pan out, and the final days before Christmas have retailers being “much more aggressive in terms of promotions being offered,” he said.

I went to several department stores this afternoon and there are racks and racks of sales items and not too many people on line at the registers. Plenty of spring/cruisewear merchandise at full price also. I think the popularity of gift cards also contributes to reduced sales in department stores. How are electronics doing this season?

Brick & Mortor is over-rated. On Line shopping is better most of the time.

The real estate I bought around 2003 is still 50% higher than I paid. Best investment ever. Oh, and I live at a fraction of renting. Renting is for poor people

dealboy, would you have been better off if you could have sold your 2003 apartment back in 2007?
