Discussion about
Looking at the lower end of Midtown West... on 37th and 10 ave and a building on the northern side of BPC. My impressions BPC North -- really pretty, but very quiet and too many families (i'm young), have to cross the highway to go places, a bit far from subway. 10th and 37th - horribly ugly area, too many dirty poor people walking about, too much traffic, far from the subway, But the building is so nice lol. Which would you go with if you absolutely had to?
midtown west. just wait after they build a couple of rentals there. you are also a few blocks in either direction of stuff to do. BPC is zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........
if BPC is zzzzz what is 37th Street? Isn't that no-mans land? Walking a couple blocks in either direction will lead you to the Lincoln Tunnel, homeless, warehouses or crackheads. There is nothing there. If that's your definition of exciting.. 42nd Street, maybe...37th?!!!!
Battery Park for sure.
Why are these your only options?
the glass loft building? nice. but 10th is far from subway. in winter....
Anything west of westside highway is new jersey.
Can not find any other nice modern no-fee luxury one bedroom in the price range...besides FiDi but BPC is better than FiDi. Don't really want to live on the UWS or UES and want to stay in Manhattan.
both have nothing to do in the immediate vicinity, but at least bpc was pleasant and pretty to walk around/out of. tribeca is closer to bpc than the subway alone is to 10th and 37th. i don't know..i'm new to nyc and not familiar with these areas.
"BPC is better than FiDi."
How is it "better"?
I'd pick FiDi over BPC hands down, if only for the proximity to the subways. You're going to be spending half your life schlepping back and forth across the West Side Highway and all the way to West Broadway to the closest subway line.
depends where in fidi and where in pbc.
the shlep from water and wall street to the 6 train is basically the same schlep from the easternmost corner of bpc north to the chambers st station.
bpc is an actual neighborhood, fidi isn't. much of it looks too dark and dreary too.
"bpc is an actual neighborhood, fidi isn't."
Yes, but the "actual neighborhood" BPC looks like is the worst of suburban hell. I'll take dark and dreary -- yet edgy and urban -- over boring any day.
Let me propose that you reconsider this criteria: "nice modern no-fee luxury". There is after all a reason why these are the only ones in your price range. If you are young and new to NYC, you don't want to live in BPC. I like it but its not for you. And don't get too excited by proximity to Tribeca. Its not really for you either. Its where people who don't like the UWS or UES go to reproduce.
Hell's Kitchen (North of 42nd street) is much more interesting and should appeal more to somebody in your situation. But you still have to walk several blocks to get there. Perhaps dodging Tunnel traffic to get there.
Consider getting yourself a nonluxury, old apartment in a more fun area.
I agree that NYCMatt that based on your criteria, the FiDi seems like a much better choice if only for proximity to subways. Neither BPC nor 37th and 10th strike me as interesting places to live, and they're both somewhat far from the subway (and have limited options once you get there). The FiDi has tons of subway access, so it's an easy trip to almost anywhere and probably has tons of nice modern no-fee luxury options.
37th and 10th is great for the Javitz Center. Otherwise, as you note, the area is sorely lacking but the building is nice. Wonder why the building is nice? This is NY, you aren't supposed to love your building, you are supposed to be out and about. At least BPC you have access to fresh air and parks. 37th and 10th, NO fresh air.
mathus is correct though: "Consider getting yourself a nonluxury, old apartment in a more fun area."
FiDi and BPC are manufactured for tourists. Hermes and Tiffany are down there to get the foreign currency. Downtown also caters to workers in the area but a lot of finance jobs have moved midtown. Proximity to transportation can't be beat from midtown - PATH, MTA, LIRR, Penn, airports.
you're new in town and you sound nice. please don't move to 37th street at 10th freaking avenue. this won't end well for you.
>PATH, MTA, LIRR, Penn, airports.
All those are great if you are leaving Manhattan.
People who business travel, have serious professional lives would understand the convenience factor from midtown...
hb, lb, - you two don't have a stake in the Manhattan market except to disrupt these discussions and badmouth what you can't afford.
op - truthfully, look in the area but not necessarily as far west as 10th
but...you can't even afford the cab fare to visit tribeca
as i recall, you also can't afford the PATH fare to visit hoboken
lb, aren't you some displaced person who used to live here? It's obvious you lurk just to ruin it for anyone who wants to have a go at living in Manhattan.
Despite Tribeca's sustained mystique, no one lives there fulltime. It's become a mecca for suburbanite wives and tourists hoping to get a glimpse of some celebrity.
>People who business travel, have serious professional lives would understand the convenience factor from midtown...
Moron, except the person is finding a place to live. So if he lives at 37th and 10th, why does he need such immediate daily access to leave?
>hb, lb, - you two don't have a stake in the Manhattan market except to disrupt these discussions and badmouth what you can't afford.
How the hell do you know what I can afford? I've never once spoken about what I own, what I rent, what's in my bank account, and what my income is?
oh no...someone is attacking you?
making things up?
oh no.
>Despite Tribeca's sustained mystique, no one lives there fulltime. It's become a mecca for suburbanite wives and tourists hoping to get a glimpse of some celebrity.
Really? You don't even know the difference between the West Village and Tribeca.

Hey columbiacounty, you attack me and make things up all the time. No, this isn't new. I'm just welcoming gottabrain to your group.
welcome to mr. full of shit.
Oh really? Earlier this week you accused me of making up something about inonada. I provided the link. Then you disappeared. Why?
as noted.
I get it, columbiacounty = gottabrain.
that's your bullshit.
makes complete sense to me.
gottabrain's #1 feature about living on 37th and 10th = access to transportation out of Manhattan
columbiacounty = 2.5 hours outside of Manhattan
I have lived in the Financial District and work at 37th & 10th. Choose Fidi. The only good thing about living at 37th & 10th will be your apartment, Otherwise it's a hike to low 40s and Ninth Ave to the closest semblance of bars & restos you might even want to hang out in. Battery Park City is gorgeous in nice weather. But it's true—other than the nice parks, you will always be crossing the highway to get anywhere, including the trains (and having to snake around the World Trade Center construction to get to most of them). FiDi is great if you get an apartment with the right light/views and there are plenty of them, so don't settle (it would be a drag to look squarely out at another building). I lived in the neighborhood for six years and really liked it, only moved for circumstances that had nothing to do with the neighborhood.
OP - Manhattan is full of lovely people, none of whom who obviously go by the "hb" handle.
Ease of access to hubs leading outside of New York is important to those who business travel. Maybe this isn't a demand in your current profession.
A great draw to midtown is that it is just as its name suggests, in the middle of Manhattan. You will have access to Manhattan and all it offers.
gottabrain, you keep switching your posting name betweens gottabrain, renterjoey, and columbiacounty.
So for business travelers, in Battery Park, you have quick access to the Holland Tunnel to get to Newark airport, and you have quick access as well to the Battery Tunnel to get the Belt Parkway to JFK or, to the Brooklyn Bridge to get to JFK or LaGuardia.
But I guess 37th and 10th, you can walk to the Path so you can get to Hoboken and Jersey City. Or maybe you can walk to 42nd and 8th (quick walk from 37th and 10th, right?) and then the shuttle to Grand Central and take the Metro North Harlem Line to White Plains and then a taxi to White Plains Airport, OR the also quick walk to 34th and 8th where you can get LIRR to Islip and catch a plane there. That's what the business traveler wants.
Hey, gottabrain / midtownervirgineast ... not too many people refer to me as "hb".
Company car service
You evidently don't travel. Do you have Siri make decisions for you as well?
Oh, a car service to the Path station. Why didn't Siri think of that.
making friends? or making up friends?
is there a choice (c)?
"lb, aren't you some displaced person who used to live here?"
like a refugee?
don't worry lucille, you are arguing with midtownervirgineast. The non-masculine, mildly angry demeanor always gives him away.
and you're talking to yourself.
pathetic.
columbiacounty, quick, someone set fire to the outhouse, go call the brigade.

doesn't really add up
I think you found more of the non-masculine, mildly angry guy who lives in midtownereast and wanted to be a frat boy.
you are a sick fuck.
Midtownereast / gottabrain, tell us again about your smallish 1 bedroom apartment that rents for $3200 per month.

so its fair to say that when you and lucille have sex, it's masturbation?

Have you ever had sex?
have you ever had a friend that wasn't you?
Yes, I just had her over for tea.
OP, suck it up and pay a fee to live where you want. It will only be your first time living in Manhattan once. And those glossy buildings have the cost of the fee built into the rent, but it's called marketing.
oh look who arrived. how perfect.
what do you mean "arrived"? If they are me, then they've been here this whole time.
you know best. bring in the rest. i know how funny this all is to you.
Who would you like to see? How about penthouselady? Or somewhereelse?
lets start with buyer buyer. and then bring in hones for a moment. add a dash of lucille. and repeat.
> i know how funny this all is to you.
If you would know I was a proper southerner, you'd say "i know how funny this all is to y'all"
>lets start with buyer buyer. and then bring in hones for a moment. add a dash of lucille. and repeat.
Seems like I should expand the dialogue beyond just the usual CTW cast, no?
buyerbuyer is my favorite - you always know where he stands because he says it twice. Plus he has those nice chairs.
notice how many threads county wrecks? Anyone think the op will ever use streeteasy again?
highlarious.
oh, a very aboutready spelling of hilarious. For the rest of streeteasy who is too new (in the past 4 months) to know aboutready, your "highlarious" isn't.
where did you stick jimboner?
I moved him to Dutchess County. Still closer to here than you.
you poor fucking idiot.
you poor fucking idiot.
precisely.
exactly.
are you kidding?
cc, check other posts, i was catching up. or is that too confusing for you?
catching up? to what? bring in lucille.
her shift at the suburban nj peepshow club started at.10
you're not half as clever as your owner.
oohh, that hurts. please stop.being mean. btw, any thoughts on the original post?
did you read the original post cc, or did you just decide to attack huntersberg?
Yes
No
too fucking dim witted to have an opinion on it then? or too psychotically single minded to think of anything other thsn "hfscom?
lets see...what building in the west 30's might the op be looking at? take one good guess.....
Who cares? Don't you think he knows what building he's looking at?
people who respond to these posts with the aim of discussing real estate do, you ignorant hump. the building is 585 west 37. know you know something.
You're a dumb shit real estate agent who trashes everyone here. Why would anyone give a shit about your opinion of anything?
i thought i was hfscomm? now you are acknowledging thst i actually am a real estate agent?
I have no idea what you really are.
but you have stated repeatedly that you kmow i al hfscomm. have you finally realized how wrong uou have been?
Of course not. You just confirmed it.
to who? how? hey, cc i may not be as clever as hb, but i made you look pretty fucking stupid didnt i?
Read it and weep, asshole.
?
Maybe midtownereast is still worried about all those family issues, the peter cooper stuff, or she would have time to comment on this. We need someone to resolve this little dispute.
A choice of 37th/10th or Northern BPC is like asking a man in the electric chair whether he wants AC or DC. Both options are terrible.
Any update from michaelkyleh?
battery park is both safe and clean, major neighborhood points.
Why not read a couple of neighborhood newspapers and websites to see which neighborhood you like best? Try for

www.downtownexpress.com/
www.tribecatrib.com/
and New York Magazine's website. Good luck!
