Discussion about
So, I have a 20 year old GE monogram built in that is going kaput. I was shocked to find prices for this particular model approached vikings and subzeros. Is this model as good? I dont intend to go cheap with a fridge as Id love the next one to last at least 10. But with all that, my real question is not one of just simple shopping. Im very concerned with the tight squeeze of space this built in resides in. My problem is not that Im married to this particular unit to not change anything else in the kitchen, but my concern is the in and out. The chance of damage to floors, etc. Do I find a contractor to install? Or can I rely on someone like PC Richards to do it right with their delivery contractor? What kind of contractor does something like this?

The ice maker in our 15-yr-old GE monogram stopped working, so we had to pull it out. There is an inch of clearance on top and zero on either side. The super and my husband pulled it out with no damage to the ceramic floors. The super replaced the hose and we're hoping it'll last until we move out. As long as you buy a refrigerator with the same dimensions or slightly smaller, installation shouldn't be ain issue.

That's a bit heartening to hear.
My kitchen floor is continued from my living room, stained oak.
But the replacement fridge is 700lbs!

truthskr - we have a piece of equipment in our den which from time to time has to be slid out for work to be done. We have gotten large pieces of cardboard (from those very large UPS shipping boxes) to put in front so that the equipment slides on that, rather than ruining the wood floor. If you have to you can tape down the cardboard with some blue painter's tape so it doesn't slide.

PH41, Yes thick corrugated is a good idea. I imagine there are contractor style rugs out there as well.

Any opinions out there on this model? At around $6500,go for another $1500 for a subzero. Or is the difference negligible?

subzero with glass door is way cool. You get a giant night light and you can spend time in fornt of it looking at all the leftover bags.

Truth- have you looked at any of the "French door" n
models? Gives much wider refrigerator space on top with the freezer below. Seems like a great alternative to side by side if door clearance is an issue

Im not a fan of the peephole fridge. its just too odd to me.

PH41
No clearance issue with the swing of opening doors. Id look at french door models as well.
I have concerns with elevator clearance though. Elevator is small and is 84 inch clear in height, but gets taller once inside elevator. But its not deep so I may have to buy a fridge where they remove and reinstall the compressor. Big pain in th A.
Oh forgot to mention the current built in fridge is 84 inches tall to understand the above drama.

And now Im reading around forums that say GE monograms arent built as well as they used to be.What I want more than anything besides one that will go in and fit properly is one I dont have to change or fix for a long time!
