Discussion about 1 Astor Place in Noho
Holy crap! I moved in recently, and I haven't been able to get a good night's sleep yet. My apt. is facing 8th street, and I understand it's a noisy area, but the apartment windows are absolutely USELESS as far as soundproofing goes. You can pretty much hear conversations from the street and the trucks moving around as if they were sitting on your couch. Has anyone figured out a solution? Maybe getting management to install better windows?

Um, it's the VILLAGE. It's crawling with college kids, "artists", musicians, and every stripe of every kind of "non-traditional" type that embraces the bohemian way of life the Village has been attracting since about the 1860s. If you want quiet at night, you should have moved to the Upper East Side, where people have jobs.
And your across the street from Cozy Soup and Burger, best burger place around.
THe chicken soup is stellar as well.
Get headphones
Install Citi Quiet windows. They go on the inside of the existing windows.
"Um, it's the VILLAGE" -- Truly. These days I don't even like *walking* in the Village much on weekend nights, because it is crawling with noisy, rowdy young 'uns.
But I never heard of Citi Quiet windows. How much do they cost, for say two windows in one room?
If you want quiet at night, BPC is the place to be (except for the occasional tour boat blasting dance music).
Get's some good earplugs at Duane Reade, like Hearos Xtreme Protection 33db, you'll sleep like a baby.
GrafGram: CitiProof windows. We've discussed them on several other threads.
But you will be entombed, so to speak, if you keep your windows closed all year round.
Welcome to new york. You will get used to it.
Sorry to say but you should NEVER have chosen a unit facing over 8th Street. Ditto for 14th. Ditto for 23rd. And Broadway. The list goes on and on and on.
8th Street is one of the worst (along with its evil cousin 14th) because it is a non-stop hub of both business and social activity day and night.
GG, it depends on the size and the complexity of the windows ... do you need to make room for an air-conditioning unit, for example? but around a thousand dollars per window is a good starting point.
I live in the West Village and the sound is absolutely horrendous. You will get used to it, but a fan has helped.
I've screamed at people a few times out the window. Also shined flashlights on people and dumped water on them. Get some eggs and throw them at people. Feels good man. F those hipsters.
CityProof windows are very effective.
1 astor is a rental I believe. So no city windows. If you are below 4-5th floor you will hear people talking. Traffic noise can be heard till at least 10th floor even with the double pane windows. Suggest white noise making fan ( if you do not like the ear plugs). Low cost. Also, over time you get used to the noise and does not bother you as much.
CityProof is very good, Bernie.
300_mercer: I lived on the 3rd floor above 3rd ave. and the CitiProof windows I had installed kept the traffic noise out. Really.
But nevermind. It's a rental.
Mr.Spain will have to deal with it and if not getting used to the noise by lease expiration, can move.
Just be sure to walk around the block (and the surrounding blocks) at night before you sign up for it.
OLE!
Tom: lol.
You can buy a white noise machine (some have nature sounds). I just put on my radio between stations and the static drowns out the street noise. Sounds like an air conditioner and I sleep quite well.
Agreed re: the white noise machine--they can do wonders. Do NOT buy the ones with nature sounds, though--if you're super-sensitive to sound like I am you will begin to hear blips and beeps as the recordings loop. Get instead a SleepMate or similar--these machines use a fan to generate the white noise rather than the irritating recordings.
Or just download a White Noise App onto your phone. That worked well when the wife and I forgot to pack her white noise machine on a recent vacation.
Yes, I know NYC is noisy. This is my 6th Manhattan apartment, and I've lived on Bleecker next to all the college bars and the street noise was not a problem due to decent thick windows.
This place has shitty windows and that's the problem. I bought a db-meter (noise level) and it reads up to 50db regularly.
I will talk to management about CityQuiet or something like that, but I don't have much hopes.
Thanks for the comments guys.
During the work week, it is noisy at night?
ding dong!

Welcome to NYC indeed. The city that NEVER SLEEPS, especially around the Village. I LOVE St.Mark .. hahahahaha
Heard CityProof is way better than CityQuit (don't know for sure... just that I am happy with the CityProof windows I have)

Does caonima have a point of view on "St. Mark"?
Brooklyn
@Mr. Spain -- did you ever figure out a solution?
People commenting here saying "it's the village, get used to it!" can't have actually lived in this building. Take it from a former tenant, the windows and glass absolutely suck. When I inspected the unit a couple of times, noise didn't seem to be a factor at all. It's not until night time things get really interesting when every night the loading dock below KMart turns into a hive of activity. Between 10PM and 1AM it's a nonstop flow of trucks reversing, braking, running their compactors, reversing again, more braking, emptying of garbage cans, truck drivers yelling at each other over the noise of their revving engines and compactors.
The worst thing is - management knows it, so does the super. They've been talking about replacing the windows in the building for years but they won't do anything because of the cost. That is unless you are related to the owner in some way, in which case they will install brand new sound proof, double paned windows in your apartment. That's right! In 2014 the nephew of the building owner moved into one of the penthouses and got all his windows replaced before he even set foot in the building. Management said it was an 'emergency' repair which is complete bullshit.
Avoid this place!
