New Apt. Questions

I have to say if that A/C is old, it's probably just going to burn through your electric bill (had and old one once in an apt we rented). And if it could be repaired, it might be costly. I'd save the money and electric bill and buy a new A/C.

For the bulbs I like the conventional bulbs that are encased halfway with silver. I find that the coating of silver redirects some of the heat away.

The air conditioner may be too powerful for the room. If the compressor cycles off too much, you don't get the dehumidification benefit and sometimes it ain't the heat it's the humidity.

1. Older air conditioners worked by cycling on and off at a very high temperature differential. Newer ones run for longer cycles, cooling more slowly.
2. Newer air conditioners are way more energy-efficient.
3. Through-wall sleeves come in many different sizes, and usually there are only one or two models that will fit each sleeve size ... usually only from that same manufacturer. Start by finding the model number of what you have, then look online for its sleeve type -- I think it's always a letter designation.
4. Use a sophisticated online wizard/calculator to figure out how many BTUs your room needs -- not just square footage. And definitely don't rely on a salesman to determine that for you.
5. Don't assume Friedrich is the best.

300 watts sounds insanely bright for a bathroom. LED technology isn't quite evolved enough yet for higher-wattage bulbs, especially non-directional ones. But you might try these 30-watt equivalents [I'm not saying I know the vendor, though]:

A bathroom can never be too bright!

I have four 60-watt bulbs over my sink, plus two hundred-watters in the ceiling.

But not everybody's objective is to blind himself so that he can manage to face the mirror.

You environmental trasher, you, Matthew. How are you going to concoct a haughty, know-it-all, declaratory religious statment when the treehuggers come after you for your 300 watt overuse?

Matt: What are you doing in your bathroom that requires so much light?

Get a new AC. They're much quieter now than even 5 years ago and far more energy efficient than the old clunkers. You should definitely make sure your unit is the correct strength for the space--look online to find ways to calculate how many BTUs you need.

I would recommend checking out Frigidaire--we just installed a new one that runs super-quietly (especially considering its 15,100 BTU capacity) and cools our large, open space quite well. Far prefer it to the 3-yr-old noisy Freddy we have in the dining room.

All in all, IMO there's just no sense in trying to repair the old unit--you won't save any money and the new versions are far superior.

Get a new AC. Bramstar is correct.
Plus, they come with remote controls now (as does just about everything else, these days).

If you feel the need for Hollywood production lighting wattage, you should get a magnifying mirror, Matt.

That pesky ear stubble? That's what I need lots of sink lumens for, but then I'm about 15 years older than Matt.

An AC that is stuffed with dirt will cycle on and off because not enough air is blowing in to remove the heat it is trying to expel. Unfortunately calling an AC person to clean it might be half the cost of a new unit and may leave you in a position still wanting to replace it.

NWT: There are ear hair trimmers for that.
