I know they are considered obsolete, etc. i don't mind them , but mine are all basically an ugly yellow , almost monochromatic. i don't care about resale, i just want a nicer shade, and i am planning to have a large percentage covered with nice area rugs. i have been given disparate advice. some say that that they can withstand at least three sandings, and others say, i am opening a hornet's nest. i don't believe these floors have ever been sanded before. they are just an awful shade of yellow. dating from probably late late 1980's. i have one contractor if he ever materializes, who has bid on the job of sanding and staining them. and another who says , that he wouldn't
touch them with a ten foot pole. Anyone, with experience in trying to do this?

I have stained several parquet floors and I have been very pleasantly surprised. You should only do it if the parquet is in good shape. Perhaps the contractor thought the floor was too thin to sand. That would be a problem.

Primer, i don't know. one prof. floor guy bid on the job, measured the floor, and bid. reasonable price, I guess. problem is responsiveness, getting him to call. other GC was told by his floor person, who had not even seen the floors, that he wouldn't get involved. Primer, do you get into this kind of work? do you have a floor guy to recommend? I had what seemed to be a quite reasonable price, but this guy doesn't even answer the phone for a GC he works for, no less for me. . also works for large Manhattan management company. Do you have anyone to recomend? late 80's and i highly doubt there has ever been a sanding. and beyond that, for various reasons, this apt, has been empty for significant periods of time. go figure. an unused pied a terre.

Carlos Salazar from JC Martin Renovation sanded and refinished 2 antique parquet floors for me one in my Windsor Terrace (Brooklyn) brownstone garden floor apartment and another at my 1925 cape cod style home in NJ. He's extremely experienced with all floors as he's also installed pre-finished floors for me as well. Email him directly at carloswoodfloors@gmail.com - this is a link to his website:
Reference I recommended you as he done several jobs for me. One further caveat is Carlos only uses a high grade finish called BONA TRAFFIC (which is GREENGUARD certified for indoor air quality). This is somewhat unusual for Wood Floor Refinishers - as they almost all tend to use generic polyurethane products.

Adam, thanks for the additional recommendation. you used the word caveat re the "bona traffic". why caveat? is it significantly more expensive? Otherwise, it sounds like an advantage.

adamkidron, Carlos Salazar from JC Martin Renovation did an absolutely beautiful job staining (and sanding) the parquet floors in my new condo. I hired him based on your comments, and reading their website.
Quick, efficient, beautiful job. He is an artist. I have absolutely no regrets re not doing new plank floors, which I had considered.
Also, I think he is very fairly priced. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm glad you went with Carlos - he's the best. Bona Traffic® is absolutely a top quality finish and top quality always comes at a premium, it is on the expensive side, but you got a premium product. Not a lot of Wood Floor Refinishers in NYC use this product as they usually go with the cheap stuff. Clients like me (and you now) usually have no clue what vendors use for finishes, prior to using Carlos Salazar I would never had inquired - his knowledge and explanation of the products and process is unique.
