Rodents at Fulton Street/South Street Seaport?

Buildings usually get thorough pesticide/rodenticide prior to demolition, and there's no reason construction should foster rats.

I'm not saying there aren't rats in that area; just that any problem might have little to do with construction.

Be glad the Fish Market moved to the Bronx.

elbeee: You are talking about the most populated area of big rats.

The construction going on in the area isn't the cause. They've been there for a long time.
Rats, everywhere, mostly come out at night.
Particular streets can't be determined in general they travel underground. Pop up from the sewer system catch-basins. Back down again and pop up on another block.

If it's a lovely building, as in clean and well maintained, then they won't make their way into your apt. unless you leave their name with the doorman downstairs.

A sizable number of them are former CEOs from the financial services industry, scurrying aimlessly in sheer panic, their severence packages nearly depleted...

Where in Manhattan are there not lots of construction sites and/or lots of rodents? I find this thread absurd.

Jason, I've lived in Manhattan for many years, in different neighborhoods and understand it's often part of city life. It's the degree we're concerned about. The scale of the construction/open sidewalks is what prompted the question and simply hoping for a better understanding of what we can expect day to day.

Glad you appreciated the humor (or, rather, my attempt at it), but in all honesty I concur with Jason.

Any area of Manhattan-ESPECIALLY the waterfront areas (& really-how far is ANY area in Manhattan far from the waterfront?) has them.

When I walk my dogs at night (Kips Bay area) the proliferation of them running in & out of a local park has to be seen to be believed. And in a wide variety of sizes, too. A bus driver parked there on layover once told me they were his night's entertainment! I do worry about my dogs getting bitten, of course, but I keep the lead very short when we're passing by. Others walk their dogs there as well-& with obvious caution.

The park is only a block in from the water, & I've always seen them there, but the construction of a new school across the street-practically hugging the FDR-could possibly account for the recent, much larger influx I've been seeing.

I'm resigned to the fact that "It goes with the territory"-which to me-is pretty much all of Manhattan Island.

This may be why some say they don't give a rat's a** for Manhattan...

Yeah, our downtown office is on Water. I live along 2nd ave. I work midtown east. My trainer trains me in Soho. I hang out a lot in other areas. I don't notice more contruction or rats in any of these areas.

I cover the waterfront, and I rarely see any dirty yellow-bellied rats.

Pier 17 is slated for demolition next year, might add to your concerns.

They are planning a music venue on the roof. "They are currently exploring how they would soundproof such a venue from the FDR Drive."

elbeee: So there's going to be construction noise and the rats living under the pier will just go down the nearest catch-basins. Pop up wherever they want. Visit their friends down in the subway system.

If you're afraid that they will move into your building, they have to get by the building's super and his shovel. That what supers use to clobber them to death.
