Discussion about
We want to do the following items: 1.paint (we'll do this ourselves, but it's the only thing); 2. have floor refinished; 3. replace range, remove over-range micro and cabinet, replace with hood (recirculating, sadly), some sort of backsplash behind range for safety; 4. replace tub in hall bath with whirlpool, replace vanity. 5. Possibly install tile in kitchen area--I've lived long enough with hardwood in kitchen to know that this is not great in a heavily used kitchen. 6. Have one wall of bookcases installed. I know that we should paint before the floors are done, but what would be the order of the other items?

1. paint
2. have floor refinished;
You can also do the floor then paint so you don't get sanding dust on the walls.
Floors are usually done first, so sanding equipment will not damage freshly painted walls.
Arx is dead-on correct with advice. Floors vs. paint are a matter of choice--no right or wrong answer here. Advantage to floors first is you don't get dust all over walls and ceiling that then have to be cleaned off. Advantage of floors last is that paint splatter from walls and ceiling isn't much of a concern because it will be sanded off.
Some things to think about:
Most building do not allow whirlpool bath, make sure its ok with your management company. If you ever want to remove the bookcases the floor under it will not be refinished, I would install after the floors are done.
I would highly recommend painting one coat on all walls, then finish the floor and then do the 2nd coat.
Thank you all. Primer05, I have spoken with the management company a month or so ago, who confirmed that the board needs to approve the tub. I'm hoping. Arx, very helpful timeline!
