I'm curious to hear peoples opinion on Sandy's affect on renovation costs in the NY area. I was looking at an apartment which is a complete gut renovation in the city. However give recent developments (obviously terrible), how they are going to impact the damand for qualified contractors/builders/etc. I'm not saying people are goign to price gouging, but there has to be an increase demand and prices should go up right? There is going to be a significant amount of work to be done in brooklyn/queens/manhattan/long island/NJ area.

Anon,

I have not changed my prices at all. The biggest problem we are having is getting all the guys in because of the gas shortage and three people to a car rule. That rule is not in effect anymore and I think by midweek gas should not be too much of a problem either. Basic material prices might go up but I dont think enough to have any substantial effect.

Most of my work is in Manhattan so I cannot speak about contractors who do most of their work in troubled areas

Please do not forget Staten Island, the forgotten Island. The devastation has been horrific in some places and an entire hospital had to be evacuated, as well as many made homeless by the flooding. From what I read, the largest number of lives lost in NYC because of Sandy was in Staten Island.

Probably will make contractors even less reliable than they are now
