Discussion about
I live in a small self-managed coop on the upper east side. We just received a notice from the city that our fire escapes were not compliant with code and that they would either need to be repaired (scraped and painted) or replaced by January 3, 2013. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who knows what the regulations are and can perform the work? Also if anyone has a sense of total cost. The building is 5 stories. Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with the code, but I asked my contractor during a renovation regarding that type of work. He said the scraping is a bitch and labor intensive, but the painting afterwards is simple. I would expect high labor charge for what seems like a simple job.

Found an interesting forum with contractors, one of them wrote;

"We did a three story fire escape last summer and it was a pain in the ass. We had to enclose the area we blasted so that it didn't pose a air contamination problem. Be sure to test the paint to see if it is lead based, most paints before i think 74 or so were. If so you will have to follow rules on lead removal. I charged 14k to blast and paint 3 floors worth of steps that were in very bad shape, not seeing what you are working with I would say this would be about a 18k job paint not inlcuded. Good luck but this one is going to be a bear!"
