Bram,

The contractor has made a nice profit from you - no need to make him richer.

However, if you have used the same contractor in the past and you are extremely satisfied with the job, then a 5-10% bonus would be nice so he can take care of you next time you need him.

Most people don't tip architects/designers/contractors, and if they do, it's usually contemplated in the actual contract (i.e. bonus for coming in ahead of schedule, below cost etc.). As John75 points out, they made a healthy profit off of you and are not counting on tips to survive, and besides, the contractor is probably self-employed. If you appreciate the job, a small gift and nice note promising future recommendations to friends will provide plenty of goodwill and hopefully some value.

Are your renovations still ongoing? Hasn't it been a while?

The fact that you're not actively strangling him is bonus enough.

Bramstar,

Great question and interesting comments for all. In my many years in this business I have received several bonuses. Some were They were very nice to receive but really not necessary. The bonuses I really like to receive are referrals, that is the biggest compliment you can get. I do think it is very nice when my guys receive a bonus or tip from clients, some will bring in food for them.

A simple thank you also goes a long way.

Thanks for all the replies. ino and West--yes, we are still working but much of that is because of unrelated issues and not because of any foot-dragging on the contractor's part. He and his guys have been excellent throughout--we've been lucky to have them. Thankfully the job is nearly complete--really just punch-list items at this point along with some detail work being done by a separate vendor who specializes in restoration.

I gave my contractors guys some dough when they worked over the weekend to get the job super quick. Total was around $400. It was appreciated.
