Discussion about
Evening All, I would appreciate any thoughts, pros, or cons of living on 72nd between CPW and Col. Any sense of noise factor? Thanks.

Definitely going to see tons of tourists coming on buses to see Strawberry Fields and the Dakota.

Its a busy street. I would prefer a block north or a block south.

I haven't noticed it being too bad. True, it's busy, but it depends on how far down the street you are and away from the avenue (down the street will be better). Nothing like living along 3rd Ave or anything.

Closer to Columbus, you'll have more commercial traffic (especially early morning). Of course the M72 bus will add to the noise. But it also depends on the building, exposure, what floor, type of windows, etc. In one of our buildings (corner of B'way and 72nd) the units are facing north on higher floors w/double pane windows) so the noise is minimal at best. When my wife and I lived on the 2nd floor of a brownstone on 71st (bet. Columbus and B'way), we still felt some vibrations of the commercial traffic from Columbus & B'way in the mornings.

It is a major street so if you're sensitive to noise, I would look elsewhere as the others have said. On the plus side, it's a great area. Transportation, close to CP, Riverside Park, entry to the West Side Highway (if you drive), etc...

We lived near the corner of CPW and W. 72nd Street, north side, for a few years, facing north, midlevel floor, and heard nothing. Facing 72nd is probably a different story. But because 72nd isn't a through street heading east, the traffic is significantly reduced between Columbus and CPW. The buses going west stop in front of the Dakota. The buses going east stop in front of the Majestic. And the tourist buses stop in front of the portico at the Dakota. They do a good job of not allowing buses to stop and park on the street anymore, instead they are now forced to turn the corner onto CPW heading north and park there. I loved the block. As mentioned earlier, it is close to good transportation. It's close to a great section of Columbus. You're right there by Central Park. That said, I met a friend there a couple of weeks ago and the 72nd Street entrance to the park was much more crowd than it used to be.

Thanks for the good feedback. We're looking at something on the fifth floor facing north onto 72nd. It's definitely convenient and central to both parks, but I am concerned about the noise and also if it will feel like living in a hotel rather than a home because you walk out into such a commercial area. It's somewhat like living on an avenue in that sense. Also, there are no trees in view, although we're not quite in a position to be overly picky about view beyond avoiding interior views.

Live on it now. We face the street. Great location for many reasons, however the buses are loud. Can hear the hydraulics in the morning.

Aael921,
as lemony indicates, buses are probably the biggest problem. If you can live with that, you can live with anything. My advice is to ask the broker to view the apartment at some busy time during the day (rush hour, for instance), and spend a good ten minutes (at least) by the windows. Experience it for yourself and that way you'll know.

Thanks again. Lemony, Since you live there now, can you speak to any other pros/cons aside from convenience? I've walked by many times though not as a resident. Does it feel like a neighborhood/home?
