Discussion about
I am looking to redo the built-ins in my apt (living room, and 2 bedrooms). I would like granite tops (for cleaning and scratch purposes) instead of wood. I looked at Wolf Cabinets on UES but they just seemed very expensive ($9000 for just the living room). Any other suggestions?

9000 for 3 rooms (assuming somewhat noraml linear plus height) with granite seems cheap.

Save a G, and get a nightmare!

Wolf will visit, build over a couple of weeks, and install (well) in a couple of hours.

Granite in the living room and bedrooms?

**shudder**

That said, I agree with yikes ... built-ins for a living room for $10K is actually quite reasonable.

Quality furniture costs money. A single solid wood floor-to-ceiling bookcase would cost close to $3000 alone.

I'm always amused at how so many people scoff at "high" prices for custom-built furniture. Quite often, it's not that the furniture itself is "very expensive" ... it's just that you can't afford it.

Why shudder at granite? The top of the built-ins (radiator cover and AC cover) chip from just paint on them. We've had them professionally painted with professional grade paint and they're still chipping from the windows being open, coasters, etc.

Wolf is on the inexpensive side as they do not finish their units, you then need to find a painter. If you purchased these pieces from a millshop who finishes it would be much more

"Why shudder at granite?"

Why not just tear ALL the walls down and turn the entire apartment into one giant kitchen!

NYCApt1234,

There is nothing wrong with granite. If you wanted a less expensive option we have started to use a thin white acrylic that we install on top of the millwork, it looks like white glass

NYCMatt,

Which part is like the doctors office? Something looking modern and clean like white glass? Is that what you mean?

Rivas,

You can buy it just about anywhere. Goggle white laminate sheets.

Primer05, NYCMatt is a self-professed lover of Formica, so take his design opinions with a shaker of salt because they are utterly tasteless.

Unrelated question;
Is that green tile background at the UN assembly where everyone makes their speeches granite?
Worst...background...ever

It's marble, not granite. I agree it's ugly. It looks like linoleum. The building was completed in 1952, when that look was oh-so-modern.

You could also use glass on top of the built-ins & windowsills.
