Discussion about
Write off Manhattan entirely if I have a phobia of cockroaches/rodents? Or are there neighborhoods better than others. Noticed lots of horror stories on the west side, but is east side or elsewhere any better? How about Brooklyn?

Generally speaking, they take on the characteristics of the area's demographics - i.e., Hipsteroaches in Williamsburg, Strolleroaches in Park Slope, Rapperoaches in Cypress Hills...you get the idea.

I realize this all raises a Black Flag, if you will, but it's just something we all have to deal with.

Years ago, a friend of mine had quite a severe infestation, & actually stapled several Roach Motels together vertically, forming a high rise version of the product. Not sure if they worked or not; but when I saw them at his apartment I really had to do a double take.

That's called a mausoleum.

hc6219, don't worry ... you can get used to roaches and rodents and learn to love them like pets.

Or you could just go see a shrink. The only place I have ever seen a cockroach in NYC (or maybe that stands out) is in Chinatown. Grossest rats for me were in Tompkins Square in EV, but that was because of the hawks.

Depends a lot on what floor you live on, how newly renovated your apartment is, and how well your building is maintained. Many people on low floors see mice and roaches...much easier for them to get in. But if you've just renovated the apartment, no matter what floor you're on, it's much harder for pests (especially mice) to get in. It also helps to live in a well-maintained building where the trash does not just accumulate behind the building or on the curb.

If I have a hot dog phobia should I avoid work at the frank footer factory?
Sincerely,
