Discussion about
Im shopping for insurance quotes for a 1bdrm manhattan coop. One agent said he usually estimates at around 100/sqft for manhattan. seeing how I have no idea how to estimate the cost to rebuild my place, in case of damage, does this number seem ballpark close? I was looking at more than twice that figure.

Check your condo documents or coop proprietary lease to verify exactly what you'd be responsible for. Some buildings will rebuild your walls, floors and ceiling; others will just deliver an empty shell that needs to be fully fitted out from scratch.

$100/sqft for rebuilding seems a bit low to me in any scenario, though.

If you are in the process of buying this place and are in the process of securing financing to go to closing (not sure if you are), lenders usually require coverage equal to at least 20% of the assessed value of the unit.

Otherwise, I agree with uptown, $100 psf seems low. I live in LIC and I have $200 psf worth of coverage. If your apartment is the typical 1 bedroom size (~750 square feet), you'd have only $75,000 worth of coverage. You might be able to rebuild your kitchen and maybe your bathroom with that amount.
