Discussion about
Does anyone know of rental buildings in Manhattan with a handicapped accessible pool? Condo buildings with an inventory of rentals would also be of interest.

There is an ADA standard for public pools and spas that has been in effect since the fall of 2010. See here for more info: http://www.aquaticaccess.com/adaadvisor.htm Since rental buildings and Condos are not public facilities, they have no requirement to comply with the ADA standards.

It would nevertheless be useful to document buildings with pools that are ADA compliant, as well as to note buildings with pools that are handicapped accessible, but not fully ADA compliant.

These accessible pools are important for people who can do physical therapy in a buoyant pool that they might otherwise be unable to do.

Wow.

I know an invalid that would benefit from being able to do physical therapy in a pool that is accessible to her. She is not financially constrained. Real estate agents have not been able to find a building with a pool that meets her constraints. I have tried to find a building that meets her constraints without success.

Perhaps someone on this board knows of such a building, evidently jim_hones10 does not.

Just FYI Columbus Square has an accessible pool, but the apartments' distance from the pool and from everyday services was too great for the invalid in question. Columbus Square is pricey, but that was not the issue.

I thought it might be possible to use a real estate blog to find an apartment with an unusual characteristic by appealing to collective wisdom of this board. This was evidently a mistake.

Best Regards.

Ah jimmyboy, always giving the best impression he can give!! Always making the whole board look a little more crappy than it is! :) :)

(@jrd, if you're looking for wisdom, you ain't gonna find it from the person you've been chatting with. But don't despair, there are plenty of fine, helpful people here. Stick around, and you will eventually weed out the... well, weeds).

Cheers!

here's what i'd do op: i'd find buildings that have public gyms in them (mercedes house on the west side comes to mind) that are newer. that way they'd have to meet the new legal requirement.

i just applied a little logic. why couldn't you do that?

Hi jrd, I've seen people use those ADA compliant portable pool lifts at a few pools. Given the size of the rent you're going to end up paying for an apartment with a pool, why not just invest in one and open a wider universe of options? Check out http://www.allterrainmedical.com/cart/product.php?productid=17121&cat=253&page=1 for an example.

"didn't think so. you basically weighed in to say......nothing? "

So basically, just like you, except for your last post? (lol) Well, you also added some insults in there too I suppose... (pat yourself on the back, jimmyboy!!).

"why couldn't you do that?"
Actually, the only reason why you made your last post was because of what I said before. You must look carefully and read between the lines -- the logic I applied was just a little more subtle and advanced than yours. Good boy, jimmyboy!!

Oh, I'm well aware who it was directed towards. And your 1 piece of "usefull" ("less"?) "information" was spurred by me. You're welcome :-)

(Of course, after that, you quickly went back to being useless). Come on, jimmyboy, time for more foul-mouthed insults!

Thanks romary, this looks very promising. We are setting up an appointment to view Liberty-Luxe, the development that houses Asphalt Green BPC.

Also thanks to jim_hones10 for the suggestion to look for newer buildings with public gyms, of which this is a minor twist. It turned up several additional possibilities.

Finding a "patient enough" real estate agent to help me, as jim_hones10 suggested, didn't really work out. I would have thought that the fee on an apartment like this would have justified the work to find suitable options, but it wasn't working out for me.

And thanks to Sonya_D for double reverse psychology ninja tricks. I wasn't aware that many new developments were partnering with public fitness clubs.

No problem, jrd!
By the way, have you tried just searching here on Streeteasy? It might be a good start. While the search engine does not specify handicapped/ADA pools, it DOES allow you to narrow things down quite a bit:

When you click on "Rentals" at the top>
go to "advanced search">
on the right, click on "amenities," under "characteristics">
on the left, under "Building amenities," click on "Swimming Pool"

This will give you buildings with pools, and from there, you just need to do a little legwork on your own (for instance, call the rental or management office) to get a better idea of their facilities.

Just a little tidbit in case you hadn't already checked this out :)
Good luck!

There are precious few buildings with pools in New York City to begin with. Even fewer, I'm sure, that satisfy your specific list of requirements.

Just because an agent can't do the impossible for you doesn't mean he's not "patient enough" or working hard enough. If it's not out there, it's not out there. This isn't Atlanta.

"There are precious few buildings with pools in New York City to begin with."

There are 1,244 available listings as of right now on Streeteasy, in Manhattan alone:
http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rentals/manhattan/rental_type:frbo,brokernofee,brokerfee|amenities:pool

But yes, like I said, for jrd's specific requirements, it will take some narrowing down.

Reading comprehension issues?

I said there are precious few BUILDINGS with pools.

Do you understand the difference between "buildings" and "listings"?

Also, there are many degrees of being "not financially constrained". Many of those LISTINGS for for apartments over $10,000 a month. We don't know if that's within her budget.

I never said that what you said was wrong. So I don't really know what you're getting your panties in a bunch over. I was just providing a little extra information. (but I guess *someone* is a little touchy... wink, wink!). Both my statement and your statement may be completely true, and without conflict. :)

And of course, we don't know jrd's constraints (other than the handicapped accessible pool) -- that's why narrowing down is needed, like I said above :)

Well she doesn't understand the difference between a shareholder/tenant or a sub tenant in a co-op, so surely a listing vs building could be equally as confusing

Way to bring up something that has nothing to do with being here.

And thank you for linking... now everyone can see how I use your own links you googled against you to, again, to prove you wrong.

Are there lists of buildings with ADA compliance? Both for the building and the apartments, doors, bathrooms?
