I thought NYC has building codes dictating the minimum width of open spaces between buildings. 18 inches seems too narrow for anyone even to perform routine cleaning and maintenance.
Children aren't just for sweeping chimneys.
For new construction, the minimum distance between buildings is a few inches, what's called a seismic gap. It's so adjacent buildings can sway independently in an earthquake.
The garage next to 80 Lafayette is in the new-ish condo at 50 Franklin. Looking at the plans for 50 Franklin at http://a836-acris.nyc.gov/DS/DocumentSearch/DocumentDetail?doc_id=2009120800424002, the new building doesn't go all the way to the lot line because of a bulging old party wall between the two buildings. 50 Franklin gets wider once that bulge is cleared, so can't tell how the slot could be fallen into.
