Discussion about
We hired a carpenter in August from a recommendations on Angie's list to build out simple cabinetry in our bedroom. We gave him 25% as he said he needed to purchase materials. Then he claimed he does not have insurance - and that he was going to get the insurance required by our coop building. It has been 3.5 months and we have not seen the paperwork and he is not returning our calls. What recourse do I have?
MattT,
SO sorry to hear of your plight.
1) If under $5000 and you have records of the 25% paid/ reason paid, you can file a claim against the carpenter in small claims court. Though I would not hold my breath waiting for that money to be returned even if case is settled in your favor. I hope it is not a larger amount than $5000!
2) Give your feedback on Angie's list.
By the way, I have not found Angie's list to be accurate with their high ratings of contractors and mold specialists on their site. I found the companies/ individuals recommended to hubby to be way over-priced and work done with very minimally acceptable or even unacceptable standards. The ones we used (researched by hubby) all had the highest ratings on Angie's List.
I hope it was not a lot of $ involved for you. Though I know whatever the amount, it is still too much to lose. :(
Also, did you ask for insurance coverage carried by the contractor from the get go (should have gotten copy before giving job to the person). Anyway, sometimes it is live and learn.
rlr689: thanks for your suggestion. The amount is close to $5000, and we are very upset by it since he waster so much of our time chasing him down.
Agree regarding Angie's list. We had a key guy recommended highly by Angie's list but he was trying to rip us off after he got to our apartment. This contractor was also highly recommended but he is not delivering.
Matt,
Did you ask him for the money back?
Prime05: he sent us pictures of the custom made cabinetary though still in work in progress stage. So for that matter I just didn't think he would return the money. You have good point - I should just ask him.
MIBNYC : Don't be a racist. Keep your bigoted comments off SE.
Matt,
If he is building the piece as he says the very least he can do is hire a moving company to deliver the piece ( they have insurance) and then pay an insured person to install install. Obviously these costs should be deducted from the mill guy. I do not know how he operates with insurance
