Discussion about
how much does it cost to soundproof a floor (co-op) so they don't hear me walk? Plus a new hardwood floor. I've gotten one estimate which seem high. The actual rubber soundproof product isn't that much and the wood floor is about $4 /sq. ft. So, how could labor cost $5000??

I just installed a solid oak plank floor (prefinished) with heavy soundproofing and a heavy weight plywood subfloor in my bedroom, 2 large closets included. The room is 12 x 18. The cost, including labor, etc. was $6,400.

what is the square footage of the space? you would have to use an acoustic composite underlayment either cork or rubber. As an example if the room is 12x18 the cost would be approx. $450 for the acoustic underlayment and labor would also be around $450 to install. The wood floor is unknown as that price would depend on the species type + labor to install. Call Carlos Wood Floors by Montani Corp. - they do all my investment property floors - I also request the acoustic composite underlayment for my condo apartment. They are extremely professional and their prices are very fair. Their contact is carloswoodfloors@gmail.com or call them at 646-418-0925.

Good Luck,
Adam

In my old loft, I had insulation blown into the previously hollow ceilings, walls, and space under the floors. Though the other solutions sound much more permanent.

So, it seems like $30 a sq. ft. seems correct. What brand of solid oak did you use? I realize I also need the plywood subfloor.

$30.00 sq ft is high.

When you buy solid Oak flooring there isn't a brand but you should get select grade.

I need one person that can be responsible for the rubber soundproof material, the plywood floor and installing the hardwood floor that needs to be glued down. No nails. The oak flooring that I see is about 3.70 a sq ft. Jelj13 who did you use? Primer05 do you do soundproofing?

It all depends on the the contractor to whom you are hiring as they all differ and when I installed a solid oak plank floor last year it cost me around did $5,300, so just have a survey and then go with the one which provide best service.

delly123: The contractor picked Nicky Wood Floors. He had used them in his own home.

They also put extended the flooring into the closets, really tricky. One of the closets was squeezed in on a diagonal across two pillars.
I picked a top grade, wide plank, prefinished oak. They put down soundproofing and plywood and had to level the floor a bit.

I should add that they carted away the old flooring as part of the price.

Azematis, this is total subjective but I agree, unsulation of the cavity between the joists seems to help with noise coming from below up....and the underlay helps with the noise from above going down.

My advice....do both :)

BTW I've got some spare underlay left over for $20 if you want to save some cash.
