Discussion about
Hi, I'm getting 5 x new interior doors as part of a renovation. They will be painted plain white. I want something very solid & with a quality feel - i'm not too bothered about saving $50 per door. So what should I be looking at? I think I'm going to get solid MDF doors. Anyone got any comments? Any reason that I should look at solid wood? It seems not if they're just going to be painted anyway, right?

I have MDF doors from Trustile with glass panel inserts. Ordered them through Dykes Lumber. They came primed and were painted white on site. They feel very solid. Love them.

No reason to have solid wood doors if you're just going to paint them. Wood carries the risk of warping, MDF doesn't.

Second the Trustile rec, I'm very satisfied with the TS1000. Nice clean look with square stick and flat panel.

I have the square stick option too! but with single white laminated glass panels.

mdcougaa: The square stick option will match your baseboards nicely.

I've got a dozen MDF doors in a modern style (frameless, single flat slab), 7' high, varying widths, which I really like. They're very heavy, so make sure the hinges are up to the task (may need 4 hinges rather than the typical 2 or 3, depending on height/width/weight.

MDF solid core doors are very good.

Nothing screams "cheap" louder than MDF doors.

Thanks all - sounds like a no-brainer. Just had a look at Trustile & they seem to have what I want. Jasonl: the square sticking will indeed match my baseboards!

Mcdougaa,

I like Trustile very much but I find you can have the same doors made elsewhere quicker and less expensive. Try Manhattan door co (now called Door Stop)

You can tell the difference between solid wood doors and mdf doors?

Matt it's like hair transplants.
Just because you've notice the bad ones doesnt mean you've noticed ALL of them

If you are going to install Trustile glass panel doors......might be able to give you a hell of a discount if you are after a 36x80" 15 glass panel door.

Basically we installed 4 of these in a renovation in December but ended up having to swap one out for a 98" high door.

The hinges are chrome with ogee trim and its pre-hung.

50c in the $1 but you need to come and pick it up from Brooklyn heights. - www.collins.net.pr has my contact details.

I just don't understand why anyone would use MDF when solid wood is available. REAL always trumps fake, in my book.

Matt,

I'm not sure you could tell the difference in a painted MDF vs. a painted solid wood door. There might be 2 methods however:

- if one is warped, then it's solid wood
- look at the price tag

I can tell the difference by both sight and touch.

If you are after a 36" x 80" wood/glass 15 lite French door I just listed a surplus door we didn't need on craigslist for 75% of what we paid from Dykes Lumber a few weeks ago
- https://post.craigslist.org/manage/4343760351

(long story basically we purchased 4 but changed our mind on one of them and installed a 36x98 door in the stairwell instead).

"Fakety-fake-fake."

... it's like Stickley-Audi versus genuine Stickley.

Stickley-Audi IS Stickley. Same company. Same materials. Same craftsmanship.
